MASCAS Incident - PAF C130 down

One for the AIB. From the pictures, amazing that anyone made it out alive. RIP to those who didn't.

'At least 17 people died after a military plane carrying 92 crashed and went up in flames in the Philippines.

'The Philippines Air Force transport aircraft crashed while trying to land in Jolo island in the Sulu province in the south of the country.

'Cirilito Sobejana, a general in the Philippines army, said more than 40 people have been rescued and taken to hospital after the country’s worst military air disaster in nearly 30 years.

'The C-130 Hercules plane overshot the runway in the Patikul municipality at 11.30am local time (4.30am BST). General Sobejana told reporters: “It missed the runway, trying to regain power but it didn’t make it.”

'The Philippine news agency posted pictures on Twitter of the crash site, showing fires in a wooded area near the rear of the crashed plane, and a plume of smoke rising from the wreckage.

'The soldiers on board the aircraft were part of the increased military presence in the south of the country as part of attempts to combat Islamist militants there.

'Most of the 92 people on board were troops flying from Laguindingan Airport, 460 km (290 miles) to the northeast, said defence minister Delfin Lorenzana. “Rescue and recovery is ongoing,” he said.

'A military spokesman, Colonel Edgard Arevalo, said there was no indication of any attack on the plane, but that a crash investigation had not begun and efforts were focused on rescue and treatment.'

Pilot error, obviously.

Next!

I’m not so sure?

Trying to line up and land a thing on a piece of terrain while the Earth continues to rotate?

Clearly and act of god.

Speedy recovery to the affected

Pretty grim; jump or burn. How very RFC.

'At least 29 people have been killed and 50 injured when a Philippine military aircraft carrying troops crashed and burst into flames after missing the runway in the country’s south.

'Nearly 100 people, most of them recent army graduates, were on the C-130 Hercules transport plane which was trying to land on Jolo island in Sulu province around midday (local time).

'Some of the soldiers were seen jumping out of the plane before it hit the ground and exploded into flames, said Major General William Gonzales, commander of the Joint Task Force-Sulu.'

If true, that would mean there was fire inside prior to the landing attempt…
