It all depends where you are going, WESBA, ESBA, Dhekelia etc. On the whole housing 'aint too bad, varying from okay to stunning. Then again your quarter charges reflect this.

Some housing is free, yes, free but the condition of those is debatable. They are furnished if you so wish, your excess furniture will go into storage.

Facilities are fantastic for families, kids and singlies. The oppourtunity for all sports from darts to freefall are there for the taking.

Napa is not totally out of bounds only certain parts, namely those parts where all the young fit birds frequent.

To put it bluntly Cyprus is the dog's swingers and the extra cash (LOA) takes some spending.

I was lucky enough to serve in the west and the east.
Epi is ok but not right on the coastline.
Akrotiri is good (well it would be wouldnt it?!), the social life and facilities are superb...ARABS is prob the best beach on the island.
Dhekelia I enjoyed but well....its army run!
The quarters like said go from free and poor quality to very good but more cost, I'd suggest that you tell the missus that its only 2 years and the money saved on rent you can spend on beer/sport/strip clubs!!
You have to go there with the right attitude, the number of guys that didnt like it as it was either:
a. too hot
b. too sunny
c. dont like water sports
d. too far from the uk
I really dont know why they went there!!!
If you dont come back all trained up in sub aqua/windsurfing/cat A licence then you've done summat wrong.....feel free to PM me for info on best quarter areas/strip joints!! lol

What are you on about?

Have you posted in the correct thread?

What has a regular soldier's posting to Cyprus got to do with a TA basic training CMSR?????

Have you just joined the TA and have been told the quote above?

Regular soldiers do 10-12 weeks phase 1 training then phase 2 (This is a REME post so anywhere between 9 months and 18 months approx) and then phase 3 continuation training. We have nothing to do with the 2 week TA CMSR. If we are POSTED to Cyprus we do not have to pass anything and go for a couple of YEARS.

Methinks you are bemuddled.

ok, CMS(R)

stands for Common Military Syllabus (recruits) = 14 week Basic training, i never said anything about the TA. You got there on your own
we used to teach a two week TA course, this was the old 12 week program stuffed in to two weeks,

VM_in_RS_world works with me and is a VM who only runs if donuts are running out. hence

(you can only go when you have completed CMSR, without dropping out on PT.)

hopefully this explains my post,

thanks

Jen, me and the family went to Dhekelia for 3 years, 5&1/2 years ago. Took 2 Jack Russells. Looked at Par Avion dog shippers quotes and thought must be a better way. Flew from BFG so booked Civ Air and booked the dogs on as excess baggage (if they were lighter they could have come in the cabin with us). Total cost was 2 pax one way to Cyprus plus excess baggage. With Par Avion it would have been over £1,000!!! Also Civ air flew into Larnaca (local to Dhekelia) whereas Trooper flies into the other end of the island and won't ship your dogs. Contact Dhekelia HIVE for info. PET PASSPORT!!!!!

Best quality, nearly new quarters are Byron Heights (modern build, central heating, mossie screens patio doors front and rear). Equally as good but a bit older are Larnaca Court, Nicosia Court and Famagusta Court. Lowest quality (cheapest rent) but still livable are on Perth Village.

We had a cracking 3 years at Dhekelia. Good luck. Wish we'd paid to ship our 3 piece suite out as the Army one was crap. The issue beds ( double divan)were excellent though. Anything you take will be destroyed by the heat (we had mainly issue furniture and the heat made the laminate peel off the dining room table!!!!). If the RIB are about to change over there's normally loads of 2nd hand gear on the NAAFI boards.

Jenben, best get in touch with BARC (British Animal Rehoming Centre) based at Epi. They flew our hound back, and it was cheaper than DIY'ing. I'd start speaking to them now to get everything going.

Dhekalia itself isn't the vibrant place it once was - with the Sapper Sqn disbanded, and loads of other support elements drawn down, there's pretty much the RIB, a small garrison HQ, and med centre. Good things, weather's good, Ayia Napa is back in bounds during daylight hours, and the LOA is good. Forget about trying to get a job out there, unless you're lucky, loads of UKD posts were cut recently. Don't buy stuff from the local Cypriot Swindle merchants, get on to sales and wants out there, as long as you are a bit patient, you can acquire stuff pretty cheaply from folks moving back to UK. Also, don't get seduced by the car dealers out there, many of them were not paying out on their guaranteed final prices "due to the credit crunch - allegedly". Again, worth buying a cheap car from a departing serviceperson and running it into the ground. Enjoy, we had a great time out there, but it certainly isn't the "sunshine posting of old".

Jen,

Lots of good advice on here. Agree with previous posters. Don't buy a car from a dealer. Get one of the NAAFI notice board.

If there is a gizzit waitng for you at the unit, use it then hand it back ASAP.

Consider a spare fridge and a washing machine as essential in your move from UK. They can be filled with towels bedding etc. You can by or rent one out there but these are xpensive options particulalry as there are less people there noew and the turnover of kit will be less.

Take warm kit for winter as you will acclimatise quickly and feel it in the winter. Electric balankets are a godsend if you end up in aquarter with no central haeting. It was warmer outside in the winter than inside in my quarter.

As others have said. Everyting gets ruined in the sun so don't take anything expensive.

Above all relax, enjoy and travel widely across the island and the region. I know a little about the island having been posted there 3 times, and no, I'm not in the RAF!!!!

It's not who you know it's who you blow! Regards. Halloumikid

PS PM me if you need more info.
