A 60-year-old man has been arrested under the Honours Act, Scotland Yard has said.

The man was arrested in Redbridge by the Specialist Crime Directorate.

Sources said the man was not believed to be an MP or a Lord.

An inquiry into the Honours system was originally launched in response to a complaint by Scottish and Welsh nationalist MPs that Labour had broken the law preventing the sale of honours such as peerages and knighthoods.

It has since been widened to cover the activities of other parties.

Arrest in cash for honours probe
Police have arrested a 60-year-old man in connection with their investigation into cash for honours allegations, Scotland Yard said.
The man was arrested in London borough Redbridge for an offence under the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925, it said in statement.

He is currently in custody in a London police station, it added.

The police have said the man is not an MP or a peer but would not say if he was a member of political party.

The inquiry was originally launched in response to a complaint by Scottish and Welsh nationalist MPs that Labour had broken the law preventing the sale of honours such as peerages and knighthoods.

It has since been widened to cover the activities of other parties.

  3. The 'scandal free' Nu Labour *snigger*

  4. The man is a former Govt advisor apparently.

  5. Is the Campbell a former Government advsior yet?

  6. Well I hope it's all out in the open soon. It should make an interesting story and we'll be able to see just how deep this rot has become.

I wonder how many recent peers and Labour MPs have got sweaty palms and are looking furtively over their shoulder?

  7. A bloke called Des Smith... former Govt advisor .... anyone know of him?

    on BBC website now.

  8. Isn't he the chap that took the newspaper mole for further discussions over an expensive meal and more or less provided an itemised menu for the honours on offer?

  9. :D

I am not sure how far this will go - there is always hope that Bliar may be dragged out of Downing Street in handcuffs!

Nevertheless, this is extremely damaging to Bliar and his clique:

Now, I could tout honours for cash, but I doubt I would be believed. So the trail clearly leads further than Mr Smith. Only "Lord" Levy lies between Mr Smith and Bliar. I wonder how Levy would react to the prospect of a year or so of prison!

  10. Actually no it's not

  11. Initial reaction is to believe that Des Smith is being set up as a scapegoat. However, he was very close to the centre of the academies fundraising effort. And how could he be guilty of offering honours for cash if he didn't have the ability to influence the honours process - with the connivance of No 10 - in the first place?

Five years ago, he might just have taken the fall without further questions. However, in the current climate, further questions are inevitable - even if there are no further arrests.

  12. Well lets hope he opens up the whole can of of worms and that we will see some other people following him to the cells.

  13. I bet that if he's remanded, he's made prison librarian. They promised him an honour, they didn't specify which one.

When Smith is released on bail I suggest he does NOT go for lonely walks in the countryside, especially near woods. I wonder if his Doris is increasing his life insurance today?
