Maglev train crash kills 23 in Germany

At least 23 people have died and 10 others have been injured after a high-speed train smashed into a maintenance vehicle while on a test run in northern Germany, local authorities say.

The magnetic levitation Transrapid train, one of the world's fastest trains, was travelling at about 200km per hour in Emsland, near the city of Osnabrueck, at around 10am local time on Friday when it struck the wagon, police said.

The prosecutor's office in the city said that the collision had been caused by human error.

Most of those killed were passengers on the train, while reports say two more people standing on a train platform are also missing and feared dead, officials said.

The loss of life due to a tragic and possibly avoidable accident is truly awful , though I hope it won't stop further exploration of Maglev.

Agree with above comment, used to travel on the Shanghai Maglev on a regular basis, about 50 metres above the ground and about 300MPH. Like a cross between a helicopter and a formula one car.

Complete white elephant though, as the airport has good, clear roads to it from Pudong to the coast. And always nearly empty.

Someone told me the final bill was 1Mn USD per metre.

However, that was probably the Germans ripping off the Chinese.

Accidents happen, but never give up on technology. Imagine London to Manchester in 25mins!
