Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Does anyone know of the battle that Col Mad Mitch went into on Crete?
I think there was a comissioned picture showing him on the net next to two landie and a signaller. The reason I ask is a friend of my dad reckons he was the driver of one of those landies. Only spoke to him about it once and all he would say is it was a hell of a night. I would like to get him a copy of the picture.
    1. Does the picture exists or am i imagining things?
    2. Where can I get it?
    3. What was the history behind it?

All My dads mate said to me was" It was a hell of a night, formed up and pipers marched them into battle, and they lost 9 guys"
Not trying to Walt the guy out but if he really was there I think it is a respectfull thing for me to do to get him a copy.

  2. The picture relates to the reoccupation of the 'Crater' District in Aden in 1967.

Are you sure it wasn't Aden?
    IS this the one
Sorry don't know how to put pics up
  4. Pretty useful site here :

  5. Try this world wide web search: 'mad mitch aden 1967' just tried it and has thrown up a few sights of interest.

    Good luck
  6. Think someone has mixed up Crete and Crater (Aden)...

Have "Mad Mitch's" auto-biography upstairs ("Having Been A Soldier") - very interesting read it is too - just goes to show that problems regarding army and gutless politico's hasn't changed much over the years.

This the photo you're looking for? From this site as posted above:
  8. Following some of the links - seems you can purchase a copy of the picture(s) relating to the reoccupation of Aden via the A&SH regimental museum/shop.

Might be of some use seeing as original poster wanted to get a copy of the picture.
  9. Awesome!!
Thank you to Arrse. I did miss hear him, he was a bit pissed! Crater not crete!. He was also talking about the withdrawl onto a ship, Bulwark? and how it was the best propoganda they had as they just stood on the ground firing up at them
  10. Not so long ago I met a Lt Col QM who had been Mitchell's driver in Aden. A very interesting conversation followed.
  11. Saw him at Waverley Station early 70s. Steely gaze. We were all awestruck at seeing the big man himself. He was my grandparents' mp at the time.

ps it's Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
