M1 defeated my IED

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Can anyone tell me if the M1 MBT has been defeated by an IED yet in Iraq?

Several have - it depends on your definition of IED.

  3. The explosions they're creating now are so powerful they're bound to knock into the hardest of armour.

Only the second last link works for me...

  5. Ex- Stab, can`t seem to get any of your links to work?

  6. On December 25, 2005 another M1A2 was disabled by a roadside bomb that left the tank burning near central Baghdad. One crew member, Spc. Sergio Gudino, died in the attack.

On June 4, 2006 two out of four soldiers died in Baghdad, Iraq, when an IED detonated near their M1A2.

On November 27, 2004 an Abrams tank was badly damaged from the detonation of an extremely powerful improvised explosive device (IED). The IED consisted of three M109A6 155 mm shells, with a total explosive weight of 34.5 kg, that detonated next to the tank. The tank's driver received lethal injuries from shrapnel. The other three crew members were able to escape.

  7. Two M1s have been totally destroyed by IEDs. Big massive bomb goes off under the belly, and the 30-ton turret went flying, with appropriate crew members killed.

Other IEDs have caused mission-damage, including blowing off roadwheels, breaking tracks, punctured fuel cells and so on,but nothing too catastrophic from the initial kills, though I'm sure some were destroyed by subsequent fire.

Have you got any dates for these? As I`d like to look into this further.

  9. Not specifically. I know one of them occurred prior to Nov03, because I had seen pictures of it during our mobilisation.

Found this list courtesy of TankNet, in January. I see one of ours is on there. (M-Kill in Mosul, Feb 05): The tank continued to fight with the engine out, after the fight was over, they threw out the smouldering air filter and drove home)
