Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. JOE ARPAIO IS THE MARICOPA COUNTY SHERIFF (ARIZONA) AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

These are some of the reasons why:

    * Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the 'tent city jail' to save Arizona from spending tens of million of dollars on another expensive prison complex.

    * He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

    * He banned smoking and porno magazines in the jails, took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but 'G' movies. He says: 'They're in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assault innocent people when they leave.'

    * He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer's money.

    * Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

    * He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only allows the Disney channel and the weather channel.

    * When asked why the weather channel he replied: 'So these morons will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.'

    * He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he told them: 'This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back.'

    * He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

    * With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed- wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

    * On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were chatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees. 'This is hell. It feels like we live in a furnace,' said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. 'It's inhumane.'

    * Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. 'Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.'

    * Wednesday he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: 'It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!'

Way to go, Sheriff! If all prisons were like yours there would be a lot less crime and we would not be in the current position of running out of prison spaces.

If you agree, pass this on. If not, you are a namby-pamby liberal bed-wetter so just delete it.

Sheriff Joe was just re-elected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.

  2. spike7451

    spike7451 RIP

I remember seeing a documentary on that.Good on him!

  3. More than fit for purpose.

  4. Quality bloke, I wonder if we can get the same sort of regime implemented at the MCTC? Or better yet HMP!

  5. Awesome! If only prisons were like that over here then they would actually prove to be a detterent.

  6. Like he says, if they don't like it, they won't want to go back. The prison system here and in most of europe is to soft and gives many of them a better life inside than they'd have outside..... which is mad.

I'm all for making prison the unpleasant place that it should be to make it a real deterrent, making it as cost effective as it can be and making sure they aren't sitting round doing nothing when there are plenty of crap jobs out there that honest law abiding people don't want to do.

As for pink underwear...... nice touch, our convicts don't even have to wear uniform anymore..... it's too demeaning!?!

  7. What does MCTC stand for?

I think you will find that MCTC is just as harsh and achieves better results.

This is the difference between what Europe believes prisons are for and what the US think.

Criminals should be punished for their crimes

That is why they could not understand why we in Europe saw the treatment of al-Qaida prisoners as wrong, it is how they treat their prisoners.

The success of his jail should not be whether we think it is harsh but what is the re-offending rate. MCTC has a 93% success, HMP has a lot less16%(?).

  8. You can hardly compare the Military Corrective Training Centre with any prison, UK or American. Most of those who 'graduate' from Colchester go back to full time paid employment. Very few, if any at all, leaving UK Prisons, have jobs to go back to. Furthermore, MCTC isn't a Prison, it's a Corrective Training Centre. People sentenced to imprisonment in the Services, will only stay a short time in MCTC before being sent on to a prison. You don't get people doing 5 yrs in MCTC.

Those who are allowed to soldier on, fall straight back into the military society and get straight back on with their lives in relative comfort. Those released from HMP don't have that luxury, so are more likely to re offend. After all, they've bugger all to lose.

  9. There you have the point if your life out side is Sh1t then your time in prison was pointless.

We need to decide what prison is for, is it for revenge or re-education? I have had students who have experienced Her Majesties pleasure and changed their future. One when inside ended up teaching others simple maths and english. In his words he could not believe how bad the educational levels were. It is all down to cost. It may be more cost effective to spend large amount on prison education up front then society spending larger amounts later. Maybe they should not be let out till they have reached an expectable educational standard.

  10. Top man. Should we club together and buy him?

    Quack

  11. Remember that he is elected to office and therefore a Politician!

Indeed he is tough and that is OK up to point but a lot of people think he is playing to the gallery for votes and goes way OTT.

As an example, at a time when there was a spate of violence and killings including 12 execution-style murders, he staged a massive anti prostitution campaign with of course a huge publicity drive to go with it This involved over 350 deputies pulled off other investigations and regular patrols for two months. The result of this stunt was 80 cases all of which were declined for prosecution by the County Attorney's Office.

Amongst his claims are having arresting Elvis Presley, breaking the French Connection and being in weekly shoot-outs. A lot of people really do think he has a bit of a problem!

Some of his other claims include:

Invented the idea of housing inmates in tents: Untrue. The Arizona Department of Correction has used tents for decades. Facilities in other states also used tents way before Arpaio came along.

Saved millions by feeding green bologna (surplus food) to inmates: Untrue: Jails and prisons in Arizona and all over the US feed surplus food to inmates and done so for many years.

    Less keen on shouting about:

Lawsuits brought by employees, former employees, inmates, and the families of dead inmates. This has cost tens of millions and Arpaio misled the public about the cost. Frequently said a high profile $8.25 million settlement over a death in custody cost nothing, being covered by insurance. What he did not say is that the county had a $1 million deductible on all claims which has now increased to $5 million per incident because of the sheer number of incidents.

A critical shortage of deputy sheriffs needed to perform fundamental law enforcement services. A significant number Deputies that could be assigned are (strangely enough) needed as full time personal bodyguard details for Sheriff Arpaio.

Prison officers needed in undermanned jails are assigned to hugely labour intensive publicity driven chain gangs in order to get Arpaio more TV airtime

Projects that bolster Arpaio's ego, satisfy his need for votes, publicity and his personal safety are all fully staffed. He has the largest executive staff of any police agency in Arizona and is dogged by claims of cronyism. By comparison, the Los Angles County Sheriff's Department (a lot bigger) has half as many on the executive staff. Critics say that millions spend on excess and questionable executive positions are wholly wasted.

Hundreds of current sheriff's office employees expressed a vote of no confidence in Sheriff Arpaio. Police officers associations throughout the State voted "no confidence" in Joe Arpaio as Sheriff.

Worst of all are allegations that Arpaio routinely abuses his authority for personal and political reasons..

Toughest Sheriff? Maybe, but also publicity seeker playing up his image to win votes. And it works.

  12. Could he become a naturalised Brit and then voted into Parliament and become our new Prime Minister and sort out this country?

  13. I wonder what our prisoners with their hotel rooms, playstations, dvd players, colour tv's and lack of prison uniform would think of him taking over?

Hell, if I was homeless I'd go commit a crime to get a nice room and 3 squares a day courtesy of HMP.

  14. Whoah there Blogg!! Don't dispel the myth. For god's sake man, we were almost feeling good for a minute then that there might be someone out there who actually felt how we did about scumbag gangsters. At the end of the day, even if he is a publicity seeking corrupt official, just so long as he is making life (and death) a misery for these fcuking lowlife scumbag drug dealing raping noncing gangsters - I DON'T CARE!

  15. All very interesting.....So...what are the re-offending rates?
