Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Having left in 77 I've been trying to work out which trades no longer exist, the one's that I can remember which are no longer extant are:

    Fitter Turner
    Fitter Gun
    Blacksmith
Vehicle Electrician (Not sure about this one, might be my memory)
    Instrument Technician
    Shipwright (?)
    Radar Technician

    And best of all:
    Non Trade:
Regimental Dutyman which became Soldier REME

  2. The trades left in the REME are;
    Avionics Tech
    Aircraft Tech
    Electrical Tech
    Vehicle Mechanic
    Recovery Mechanic
    Armourer
    Metalsmith
    Tech Storeman

Vehicle Electrician got taken out about 2 year ago, but many are still around.

    Clerk!

  4. Telecommunications Technician
    Electronic Control Equipment Technician

Shipwright was a trade - I recall one guy in the 80's who spent his entire life at Marchwood

  5. I was sure I remembered a shipwright from the 70's, I presume they're no more?

  6. All 26 of them still exist (Shipwrights) although they nearly got amalgamated a year or 2 back with metalsmiths

Tech Storeman has been renamed to Technical Supply Specialist

    Technical Support Specialist :)

  8. Add Driver REME to your list of those trades that are no more.

  9. You mean Electronics tech. These still diverse into the "old" tech trades, albeit with new names and are equipment course dependant

Arty SE (SE is Systems Engineer)
    Armd SE
    GW SE (Guided Weapons)

Not sure about tels though... I believe that has become an "add on" now, and not really a seperate "trade" as such.

    Rockstar,

You know and I know that these names are only used by records to make units think they are getting someone who knows what the fcuk what they are doing. There's nothing better than getting a Tels Tech at first line and giving them the choice of an equipment course, tech library or radio store .

By the way are you still looking at naked pictures of me?

    :D

  11. Armourer who left in Jan 87. when did Gun fitter bite the dust then. so if you are an armourer, do you specalist in one particular area. ie Armd?Artillery or Small arms

  12. You and Tiny. I'll never forget that sight!

  13. Noone mentioned 'Gibbering Drunk Waster Hiding in the Machy'. Was I the last one?

Oh hang on, yeah its there above. Fitter Gun, gone.

We had a shipwright with us in Soest at 5 Armd Wksp. He used to hang around the with the mentalsmiths. Good bloke.

    Wasn't there an electro-mech in the 70s?
