Lost Trades

#1
Having left in 77 I've been trying to work out which trades no longer exist, the one's that I can remember which are no longer extant are:

Fitter Turner
Fitter Gun
Blacksmith
Vehicle Electrician (Not sure about this one, might be my memory)
Instrument Technician
Shipwright (?)
Radar Technician

And best of all:
Non Trade:
Regimental Dutyman which became Soldier REME

#2
The trades left in the REME are;
Avionics Tech
Aircraft Tech
Electrical Tech
Vehicle Mechanic
Recovery Mechanic
Armourer
Metalsmith
Tech Storeman

Vehicle Electrician got taken out about 2 year ago, but many are still around.

Shipwright was a trade - I recall one guy in the 80's who spent his entire life at Marchwood

Electrical Tech
You mean Electronics tech. These still diverse into the "old" tech trades, albeit with new names and are equipment course dependant

Arty SE (SE is Systems Engineer)
Armd SE
GW SE (Guided Weapons)

Not sure about tels though... I believe that has become an "add on" now, and not really a seperate "trade" as such.

Rockstar,

You know and I know that these names are only used by records to make units think they are getting someone who knows what the fcuk what they are doing. There's nothing better than getting a Tels Tech at first line and giving them the choice of an equipment course, tech library or radio store .

By the way are you still looking at naked pictures of me?

:D

Armourer who left in Jan 87. when did Gun fitter bite the dust then. so if you are an armourer, do you specalist in one particular area. ie Armd?Artillery or Small arms

"I recall one guy in the 80's who spent his entire life at Marchwood "
I survived 9 months at Marchwood,, What a dump. still get nightmares..
Sent there to do a course on S&P electric cranes before posting to RAF Gan, and guess what, No cranes on Gan...so I got moved to singapore,
I think the VM(C) EE which ended in 70s was an attempt to take Electricians from RE as I spent almost all my time on postings attached to RE units working alongside Power Generation guys, forget the exact trade.
