Old mate of mine [let's call him Roger] is a scout leader in North London.

When the last congestion charge was brought in their old LDV diesel minibus was hit by the LEZ charge [2008] and the options were to buy a more modern bus (£20,000+) or pay to have the engine upgraded with a catalytic converter etc at £4,000.

They eventually raised the cash to but a new bus with the aid of an award from the National Lottery.

Now they have to have a Euro VI Minibus to continue operating. This will cost £35,000 and their existing bus cannot be upgraded as it's too old and "not compatible" with the requirements of Euro VI.

Bear in mind that the Scout bus is used to give kids in deprived areas holidays, adventures and weekends away. They have written to Sadiq Khan and received nothing more than a form letter signed by a minion to the effect that the The Mayor is aware of some difficulties but the priority is to reduce vehicle pollution within the capital which is responsible for over 1,000 deaths per year ..."

As if a scout minibus that does 8,000 miles per year is going to make a big difference. The bus has been used to take the kids for trips to e.g. Wales and the Lake District.

Rog has had enough and the scout group may be disbanded next year.
Maybe Kahnt’s dad could drive the bus?

The Royal Family have got houses everywhere, but like all rich people have no taste. Balmoral, Sandringham, Windsor, the complaints go on…
The Queen (with her Windsor gaff) even has a Slough postcode.
except for Balmoral and Sandringham which HM The Queen owns, all the other palaces and castles are owned by the Crown Estate like a Council House, Her Majesty gets the use of them but does not own them

True, though Police are central gov't funded.
And the previous London Mayor & TFL wasted £43?£79 million on a dodgy bridge that didn't get built.
Not quite correct, 1% of business rates goes to the police in every county/utinery Council, 50% goes to central govt and the other 49% shared by the district or county council or to the utinerary Council.

Business rates are based on rents and there is a massive cluster fück coming down the road in the present economic climate as business rents are falling and fast so at the next rates review the income for all including the police will fall, significantly.

As an aside though some of us who work for local government have being telling central government that the business rates system is broken for years, Whitehall has suddenly woken up and smelled the coffee, well seen the figures. Business rates in there current form will not be here in 5, 10 years max as it is a broken system so to bring it back on thread, police income from local share (the 1%) will be dropping by 20 - 30% at the next business rates review.

I read somewhere the other day something that rings true.
Auswich is still standing and has not been torn down because the wiser members of the Jewish community thought that poeple should learn from history and valuable lessons will be learnt.
Only stupid poeple try and erase history, the wise ones learn from it.

Thanks for the correction.
You raise a serious point about central govt getting a bunch of (unearned?!) cash. Like council house money went into central not local.
Central gov't doesn't care, it gets its cut & does all the fancy stuff, rather than local gov't that actually has to deal with things
(not exactly how it is , but y'know).

I'm still smarting about shirley porter gerrymandering, flogging off council cems for 5p and pissing off to Israel to escape the heat/courts ;)

Me Morden also, how abaht that!
NB, Morden Underground being the terminus means obv an empty train every time, sooo convenient. Cheers:grin:

Small world, it was always a stress free approach to the morning commute, a guaranteed seat but for those getting on a Tooting Broadway a free seat was a rare occurence.

I'll catch you down Ganely's, the Royal Surrey or even the Kilkenny to chat about this and more some time.

Which is why I became a contractor, get away from that corporate BS primarily, not for the hope of better money.

Oh yes, some time later I got a nice 9 month contract with Network Rail, the feeling of just being able to get on with my job and they liked the options I suggested (which worked well too) was so refreshing. I remember it an the people well and fondly, there was nothing to feel resentful about.

That's what most sensible people were hoping for last election .

Khant has the postal vote sown up.

Refugees welcome, so they can vote for Khant. Or should I say 'Khunt?.

That's the bit I don't get, why won't the government restrict the use of postal voting

It's in their power to do something about it

Putting up with Sadiq Khan is part and parcel of the joys of living in London
There are times when I wish Putin was the PM, really, I do. He just wouldn't put up with his sh!t. Can you imagine a Mayor in Russia creating a mechanism whereby famous landmarks could be re-named 'BLM Square' or whatever? No, such a Mayor would be found by police in bed with a dead child prostitute, or would top themselves by jumping from the roof of a tall building, twice (for good measure).

Because it’s overwhelmingly (ab)used by a certain demographic that almost invariably votes for a certain party. The shrieks of outrage from the usual suspects should anyone attempt to “deny access to democracy” by actually ensuring that a democratic process is operated would be earth shattering.

To an uncomfortable extent the shrieking classes have already won. Any Government attempting to do anything along the lines of rein in benefits expenditure, remove and / or restrict entry to the country by illegals, adopt a policy that benefits society but is being used to the advantage of (insert minority group here), stamp out the other, more prevalent forms of racism or religious intolerance and, well, anything else that would be on the agenda in any sane society is going to get absolutely shredded. They very simply don’t have the bollocks for it.

We are being governed to the requirements of a very narrow agenda from a very small but vocal group of ideologues who’d be out of work overnight if anyone ever got around to putting this shite to bed once and for all.

Prime Minister for life? Not sure that that works for me.

Hard to say. Some, but not as much as you would think. Anti money laundering is getting stricter and stricter, and the fines are huge. Why risk it in a highly regulated financial environment when you can do so somewhere else where they have more blind eyes than St Dunstans?

I work in the City, my wife works in the west end near Holborn. We commute in now, but used to live in SW London. We still take our kids into London for meals, entertainment, shopping, history etc. I just avoid the shitty bits.

I do the same when I visit other cities around the world. Chicago is one of my all time favourite cities to visit (along with Vancouver), but I know there are places to go and places to avoid. It doesn't make the whole city bad.
When I first moved to London in 1979 I lived in Cannonbury in a police section house, an aresa much loved by wealthy socialists, Barbara Castle, Margaret Hodge, Tony B.liar etc, an area I could never aspire to own a home in myself. It was however an oasis in a sea of shit, when I bought my first property in London I loved in Enfield which was then a modest but safe and respectable area, kt is now a shithole. My last home in london was in Woodford Green which again was a pleasant area. Unfortunately the white flight has increased and areas that were previously a good investment, safe etc are now just shitholes. Not saying you are wrong just the decent areas are becoming more and more isolated.

Hopefully the little scrote will be voted out at next election.
That's 4 bloody years away, there won't be anything left to save by then, the damage will have been done.
