No doubt the Syrian regime is about to take on the role of usual suspects pending transfer to the mad Mullahs of Tehran.
Private Eye has always felt there was something dubious about the conviction Al Magrahi.
It will be a sad day for Scottish justice if it is shown that the trial was crap. Perhaps an even sadder day for law enforcement and democracy if the reason that the trial was crap is that the evidence produced was tainted on the orders of politicos.
At the end of the day some bastard(s) did it and if it wasn't Gaddafi they should be held to account.
Private Eye is not alone. Paul Foot fell for the claim that the DIA were involved in a protected drugs route and that Syrians switched the drugs suitcase for the bomb. He later changed his mind and believed the PFLP sponsored version. Some high ranking Iranian spook defected to Germany and fingered Abu Nidal / Libya sponsored by Iran. And rumours persist of some Oliver North / CIA black op involving drugs into the US in exchange for hostages, again with somebody (Syrians?) switching the cases.
And those are just a few of the more plausible theories. Time to dust off the tinfoil hat I think.
