Let army show you how to lead


IDG’s Bob Jones, the programme director, believes the army’s constant use of feedback and striving for excellence can teach the commercial world valuable lessons.

“In business — as in combat — change is constant,” he said. “So how do you energise people in constantly turbulent times and get them to go that extra mile? Many see middle managers as a cynical dead hand on an organisation.

“Wrong. They are often sources of untapped potential and their experience can build a springboard for high performance. We reinforce the military notion of ‘that’ll do won’t do’ by encouraging people to adopt the army culture of continuous improvement based on regular post-action reviews.”

Is it working? Last month the programme was named most innovative training initiative at the Institute of Financial Services / Deloitte Awards, partly for its measurable returns.

Surely Sabre should be all over this like a rash?
