Leicester City Helicopter Crash

thanks for the info. However my original question was more about why contra rotating blade set up never seemed to take off in the west.
The posts so far show catastrophic results when a tail rotir fails. Logic would state a solution would be to get rid of the tail rotor, hence contra rotation would seem to have a benefit.
as it hasnt seemed to take off at all I assume there is a massive problem somewhere that isnt obvious?

thanks and apologies for daft questions.

Being only an interested layman, l would hazard a guess that contra-rotating main rotors require a more complex gearbox and ancillary items, which could mean more difficult maintenance regimes, and add more risk of failure.

It would be interesting to find out how many hull-losses there have been on the Russian Kamov fleet.

No worries I thought I mentioned it was complex ..and Tam is right.

Westlands did study coaxial concept called the Westland Independant Target Vehicle ...but never went further than wind tunnel model and suspect it be along the basis of the Sikorsky S-69 ABC, /S-97 Raider / SB-1 Defiant

Weight perhaps, having two rotor discs with associated track rods, hydraulic jacks and a complicated gearbox? Not to mention being an utter bästard to rig and track...
This seems more sensible: Helicopters: why hasn't NOTAR been more popular?

NOTAR is good but has limitations of power and the amount of fuel used..amongst other issues.

Also depending on who you talk to in the industry, some say that the product and logistical support from MDH is crap. In some of their defence, when the Mesa based MDH became independant from Boeing in the late 90s (few years after Boeing took over McDonnell Douglas) so they did not have their big brother brethren overseeing them. The new indy MDH under Dutch RDM Holdings took the MD500/520N NOTAR/MD900 NOTAR with them while the AH-64A/D Apache/Longbow and A/MH-6 Little Birds. Literally they were next door to each other on at Falcon Field, Mesa.

The CEO of RDM Holdings, guy, Henk Schaaken is now MD of Specialist Aviation Services here in UK which were the vendors and operators of the MD900/2 for Police ASUs and various air ambulance charities but the charities I mentioned are being replaced by the AW169...because Specialist bought over a dozen AW169 3 years ago.

Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance were the first and they still fly MD902 as well as the AW169 (my photo from Helitech 2016, Amsterdam)
Lincolnshire Air Ambulance flies AW169 (my photo from RAF Scampton Airshow)
Essex and Herts Air Ambulance flies new AW169 and MD902 still (my photo of AW169 at Helitech 2017 Excel)
The Childrens Air Ambulance (my photo from Farnborough Airshow 2018)
Devon & Somerset Air Ambulance

Next ones to receive will be
MAGPAS
Warwickshire/Northants/Air Ambulance

However the MD530F is still very popular what with deliveries to law enforcement (Virginia Beach PD just had theirs delivered and I saw it at Heli Expo earlier this year in Vegas my photo) and MD530 armed to the Afghan Air Corps also Malaysian Air Force is supposedly first customer for new armed MD530G (my photo also from Heli Expo earlier this year in Vegas).

The order book is not that riveting for the 902.

Was fortunate to be invited into MAGPAS launch of their new AW169 this week at their base on the now defunct runway of active RAF Wyton. It is intended to replace the Helimedix MD902 Explorer by beginning of next month. So apart from Farnborough 2012 and Heli Expo 2018 in Vegas, this is probably the third time I have seen AW169 fly and here are my photos (with JARIC buildings firmly behind me and other folk as not allowed to take photos lol of base!!) of wednesday's event.

Cheers
