Calls to axe 'racist' Zulu film from Folkestone's Silver Screen Cinema listings
Calls to axe 'racist' Zulu film from cinema

Campaigners are calling for a charity showing of epic war film Zulu to be axed over claims it contains “racist overtones.”
The 1964 classic will be aired at Folkestone’s Silver Screen Cinema on Saturday to raise aid for armed forces charity SSAFA.
But in an open letter to Folkestone Mayor and district councillor Ann Berry some 28 people came out in protest this month.
“(But) we believe that the choice of the film Zulu, with its inaccurate portrayal of historical events and its distortions and racist overtones, could have a negative effect on relationships within the changing and richly diverse communities here in Folkestone.”

Martini-Henrys will be issued plus 100 rounds per man.
Load, aim, fire.

The campaigners, all twenty eight of them I believe, merely wish to be able to avoid such festivities otherwise they might be involved in donating funds to SSAFA or even something else to do with HM Armed Forces.

I can only presume among other films they are readying themselves to campaign against is The Ten Commandments. Racist? Yes, it tells us the Egyptians were mean and nasty and kept Jewish slaves to build the pyramids, all now firmly debunked of course although Red Ken might want to steer clear of that whole nest of Vipers. Then there was the drowning of the nasties which we were all to cheer and clap about, how nasty is that. Ban it I say and ban it now.

There must be an equivalent sort of Muslim film too about Mohammed putting others to the sword, perhaps that will be ok though. We will see, or maybe we won't....

"its inaccurate portrayal of historical events."

Yep.
Absolutely.
As anyone who has done the tour will tell you.
But still a cracking movie.

Is that because the film was actually shot 90 miles south-west of Rorke's Drift in the Royal Natal National Park in the Kwa Zulu Natal province of South Africa,an area with prettier scenery than the real location?

There's not much that isn't prettier than fahsands of Zulus coming to tell you to make with the short sharp travel motions.

There's lots of reasons...
Copy/pasted from elsewhere.

The mission station and surrounding hills are all much smaller, closer, lower, than represented in the film. The filming site was chosen for its dramatic scenery, not being a reasonable representation of to the historical battle site.

The battle took place in the middle of summer in the height of the rainy season. There should have been thick vegetation everywhere, not dry, dead grass. Further, the river crossing would have been a raging torrent, not a calm paddling pool.

The 24th was an English regiment at the time

They did not sing Men of Harlech in an ad hoc sing-off the next monrning

DeWitt was not a drunkard or a pacifist. He did not foment mutiny amongst the native levies. He left his mission station before the battle by agreement to join his family.

Miss DeWitt is a fabrication

The drift was not an afternoon's wagon ride from Ulundi

Dalton was not some effete wimp. His leadership was crucial in the battle but this is missed off totally in the film.

Bromhead was rather deaf, but was not a caricature of an incompetent upper class twit. In fact, he had begun preparation to defend the mission station before Chard returned from his "mud pies"

The decision to stay was not some ardent heroism. If they had left with wounded and sick on ox wagons, they would have been caught and slaughtered in the open. There was no real alternative.

The native levies did desert but of their own accord, along with their white officer and NCO. The NCO was shot dead as he ran.

Hook was not a malingerer or a thief. He was a model soldier, grievously slandered by the film.

Rifles taken at Isandlwana were not used by the Zulus at Rorkes drift.

Colour Sgt Bourne was actually very young for the rank and was in fact of diminutive stature.
