FMoP: Thanks for that referral. I almost never get out of the NAAFI Bar - like so many of you whilst on active duty ;-) - and was unaware of that other thread.
Some excellent reading on that thread. Lives very well lived indeed to quote Biscuits_AB. I doubt we will see their like again.
A charmed life too. Not only did he see out the war in one of the most dangerous roles around, but he survived 1950s motor racing too. The ranks of Battle of Britain pilots now very thin, but so too is the grid of those who drove grand prix cars in the 1950s. Now only the front two rows are filled.

Truly a life full of risk and adventure. RIP.
