Larry Flynt RIP

The American porn publisher Larry Flynt passed away the other day, aged 78. His magazine, Hustler, was one of those proper porn mags, along with the European ones, that made you realize just how shit Fiesta and Readers Wives really were. It also had some funny as **** cartoons like Chester The Molester, and ripped the **** out of everyone going. Cheers Larry, you old ****, I appreciated you mate.

His greatest achievement off the back of Hustler was perhaps his supreme court ruling on the first amendment, after deliciously ripping the piss out of Revd. Jerry Falwell with a parody Campari ad.

I never read Hustler - but the impact of it and of Playboy on American society should not be underestimated.

I am sure that, like I, most people went to playboy for the pictures of the women, but did actually read the articles. The one that stayed with me was an article by Asa Baber on the rights to be sexually active in the way you see, as long as it doesn‘t effect on children or animals.

He highlighted the plight of several homosexual men who were jailed for doing BDSM. Totally consensual, in private and nothing to do with anyone else, but as it was considered violent it was assault (or US equivalent) and they got sent down. It pointed out that straight men and women also faced such penalties if they liked to get a bit rough too.

So this was an American magazine, marketed to red blooded heterosexual males - and it was campaigning for the rights of gay men to crack on with the nipple clamps, ball gags and riding crops! This was at a time when it was illegal to go down on a woman in several US states, and also illegal to sodomise a woman, by a man in the UK.

Truly astonishing - and only recently in the UK we have banned some forms of porn loved by certain sexual minorities (seeing a statuesque Dom woman ‘Queening’ her sub outside Westminster on the BBC in protest, then realising that by filming such activities the BBC fell foul of the legislation that they were protesting against! Madness).

Fiesta Readers Wives was like the Ikea catalogue of Pads' issue furniture.

Different markets; As I recall in Hustler the girls were glamorous and aspirational, ie. the girl you might hope to meet but never would, whereas Readers Wives etc featured the girl next door or who might be on supermarket checkout, and was within reach of the ordinary guy.

I think a few of us on here that may, or errr may not have recognised at least one lady of the house (SMQ) in a tatty copy of Razzle "Readers Wives" found behind the armitage shanks cistern in the traps whilst on a very Cold War site guard.
Such one handed reading material was a light relief from constant revising on Rules of Engagement and SOXMIS.

The current British case law on non-consent to assault is a case concerning the insertion of fishhooks into foreskins...

Razzle "Readers Wives"
Ah yes the bible of clunge topiary that would put a 70's Harlem Afro to shame.

I don't think many people bought it for the learned articles, so you are not alone.
