I have a HP Pavilion G6 laptop with 8 megs Ram and 1terabyte of two hard-disks. There is stacks of memory on the hard disks as I back up to a memory thingy as i go along ( once bitten twice shy.)

Well, I run on windows seven and do my updates as they come in and now the old girl is running a bit slow , I thought it was my internet at first but i am getting 30/40 megs on my wireless network . So Do you know if its worth sticking a new processor in to it or should i save up more pennies and buy a new lap top or even, god forbid, download windows 10 ( which i struggle with )
cheers All .

with old laptops, a common problem is overheating due to matted dust and dirt blocking the grill / fan ducting.

Is your laptop very hot all the time and is the fan always on? If so then locate the vent where the hot air is supposed to be blown out and check that it is not blocked.

you should also upgrade it to windows 10 but i think you may have missed the free upgrade but you should check anyway.

Try downloading Glary Utilities. It's free and gets rid of a load of rubbish.

A quick fix for the dusty internals is to get one of those squirty air bottles (if you can be bothered) and squirt that though the vent holes for a second - just to loosen the crap. Then get the crevice tool on the end of the vacuum cleaner hose and suck as much as you can out through the vent holes.

I open up our PC's at least once a year to give them a brush down and clean inside to keep thinks cool. I don't like opening up laptops though.

I have unblocked some that took scraping with a screw driver to get it out, the longer it is left to build up the more solid it becomes and a vac is not enough but do it once a year and your good.

This is the number one reason for most peoples laptops being ¨slower than they used to be¨ in my experience.

Does your laptop have an SSD for the hard disks, if not and they're old fashioned mechanical disks give them a defrag

Do not defrag any SSDs though as that will shorten their lifespan

When my late brother worked in the hotel industry in Germany, coffee spillage on tower system keyboards (it was some years ago) was a problem. The tech company charged DM Lots as part of 'the Contract' so he cleaned them up in return for the manager shuffling a few bottles of decent wine his way. His standard method was - take home - put in dishwasher with low temp and no soap - put in airing cupboard for two days. Worked a treat. I'm using a very good PC at work, lovely wide screen, but the keyboard is fooked - or rather the space bar is so allmyworkendsuplookinglikethis unless I try really hard to touchtype (which I can do when not being lazy). I might just sneak into the DI's office and swap out the keyboards as he is being a bit slow in authorising my latest overtime claim.

Yup.
Canny do any harm.
I've used Crap Cleaner ( free) and Advanced System Care ( free) for years, plus 10Bit Smart defrag.
Set to clean every switch -off.
Keeps both my Windaz 10s in good fettle...which is difficult as we all know it sucks.
It's amazing how much baggage PC saves up on a daily basis.

Have you checked windows update? Actually looked to see if there are updates available? the symptoms you describe can be an update waiting to install. It could also be any number of things, some of which have already been posted.

Never had to scrape stuff out, the most was using heavy duty plastic tweezers to pick stuff out - had to change a few power units mind.

I did PC Tech support as a part-time job in the uni whilst studying. We had one full time tech (Big Tony the porn king) and two of us student part-timers on IS/IT degree's earning pocket money. A call out to a blokes PC was generally the result of them looking at p*rn and picking up an unwanted PC STD - that cost coffee's and bacon butties not to squeal on them. A call out to a womans PC was generally the result of food kack, or coffee in the keyboard with much accumulated dust, fluff, hair and the crap generated by wimmin being sucked in through the cooling vents - doing make-up over the keyboard whilst using the monitor as a mirror is not recommended.

Download C Cleaner
1] uninstall programs that you know longer need, or them that have got down loaded
over time. [Tip remove a couple at a time}
2] remove "start up" programs that are not needed on startup
3]remove any browser plugins not needed
4]run "cleaner", get shut of the sh*t
5]Run "registry" and remove sh*t
6]update your browsers
