Korea during the second world war was occupied by the Japanese and after the war was divided into two countries by the 38th Parallel of latitude, becoming known as North Korea and South Korea, with the North becoming influenced by the Soviet Union and the Chinese while the South essentially relied on the backing of the Americans.
