Taliban fighters repelled after launching attack on big military base

KANDAHAR AIR FIELD, Afghanistan — Almost a dozen Taliban insurgents launched a brazen daylight ground attack on the largest military base in southern Afghanistan Tuesday, but they were immediately repelled by coalition soldiers including a group of Canadian engineers performing training exercises near the base perimeter.
The assault was launched at 11:18 Tuesday morning, local time, on a northern boundary at Kandahar Air Field. A lone insurgent ran up to the base perimeter and blew himself up, creating a small breach in a chain-link fence. Coalition forces including the Canadian engineers then engaged with more insurgents who arrived on foot, said Maj. Josh Major, a Canadian officer based at KAF. He said that eight to 10 insurgents were killed by coalition forces who responded to the ground assault with 25 millimetre cannon fire. There were no coalition casualties.
KAF commander Gordon Moulds of Britain's Royal Air Force described the attack as "amateurish" and less complex than an insurgent ground assault May 22, the first at KAF since Canadians arrived here in 2006. In that assault, insurgents arrived at night. Today's attack was "more an annoyance than anything else," said Major, speaking to Canadian reporters three hours after the failed insurgent effort.
"They destroyed about $70 worth of fence."
The insurgents struck minutes after a minor, unsuccessful rocket attack on KAF. Two rocket propelled grenades were fired toward the airfield from an outside location. One coalition soldier was slightly injured in the RPG attack, the result of taking some shrapnel.
Major agreed with Moulds' assessment that the botched insurgent operation was a desperate effort to generate some publicity for their losing cause.
The Taliban "have had a bad week," said Major, referring to recent beatings they've taken from coalition forces.

I do seriously wonder if Monty Pythons Life of Brian is required watching for terrorist attacks at times. Did the special division of the Kandahar Taliban decide they wanted a day trip?

It does sound a bit Pythonesque, especially with Major Major commenting.

Bet the attackers got a shock when the 25mm canon let rip!

I'd expect more of this sort of thing as the push in the Kandahar region intensifies.
