Minister attacks Joanna Lumley for her 'deathly silence' over investigation into Gurkha charity

Daily Mail Article

A Government minister has launched an astonishing attack on actress Joanna Lumley for her ‘silence’ over a high-profile investigation into a charity for Gurkhas.

Defence minister Kevan Jones‘ outburst came amid claims that Gurkhas hoping to live in Britain are being forced to pay up to £500 to veterans' organisations in Nepal which then refer them on to UK solicitors.
Giving evidence to the Commons Home Affairs Committee yesterday, Mr Jones expressed his 'irritation' with Lumley over her failure to speak out over the allegations.

'Her deathly silence, frankly, irritates me,' he said.
Now, there may be an issue of this Ghurka charity taking hundreds of pounds off Ghurkas before forwarding them to the lawyers in the UK, or there may not. This is something that does warrant further investigation.

If the Ghurkas ARE being scammed by a charity, t’s right that this should be investigated, and quite right that heads should roll.

However, for the Labour MP Kevan Jones (who was the guy who tried to attack Gen. Sir Richard Dannatt over his expenses) to try and demand answers from Joanna Lumley as if she is a: party to these allegations or b: she somehow knows something about it and is keeping schtum is rather typical of this particular scumbag MP.

This is the bloke who as a minister of the MoD has done nothing whatsoever to support it, has done nothing but launch into malicious and personal attacks on its soldiers and officers, and now seeks to undermine the supporters of Ghurkas by suggesting that they are involved in scamming them.

I’ve got news for you Jones – you are the one who is doing the disservice, not only to Joanna Lumley, not only General Sir Richard Dannatt, not only to the Armed Forces but also the Ghurkas – as if you actually give a toss!

The death throes of a beast in terminal decline, be prepared for Labour politicians lashing out in all directions to deflect attention from their "glorious leader".

Welcome to the beginning of the 2010 Labour Party General Election campaign. I expect a tame journalist (probably from the Mirror) will begin an investigation into links between Ms Lumley and either the Tories or Lib Dems.

I went a bit out of control, was a pretty good slanging match between Dave and Cyclops and the Speaker could not stop the shouting for some time, for a moment or two it looked like he was going to call time out

Don't push him too hard; on a cold winter's night in Belfast he became closely acquainted with death. Cut the poor man some slack.

The campaign fronted by Lumley won and the Liabour party in Government lost, hence the bile, sniping, smears and vitriol being produced by this cretinous creature on behalf of his leader.

I just love in-depth political analysis so simply summed up in just a few words.

And of course I agree with it.

Actually, I've met him several times in relation to BAFF matters and he's a pleasant, sensible sort of person. Personally, I think the jury's out on whether the Lumley campaign will have done more harm than good. It's hard to see a long-term future for the Gurkhas if they cost the same as Brits.

And considering the results of a UK election won't affect me too much, that's the thing I do think is rather sad.

Sad but inevitable.

Kevan Jones appeared on BFBS this afternoon and was not prepared to take questions on the Gurkha/Lumley issue. BFBS did however play the record "Give me hope Joanna" just before his interview. Don't know if is was a gesture by the BFBS or just coincidence but it made me chuckle.

The interview with Jones was a series of soft patsy questions allowing him to tell everyone what a fine job Harriet Harman has done addressing some employment issues, some platitudes about the 2% pay-rise and how the Labour Party have looked after Forces pay so well over the years.

It was all coducted with an appropriate degree of obsequious smarming. You have to question why Government Ministers are given such an easy ride on BFBS.

Interestingly, the Daily Mail ran two nearly identical stories today on their website.

The second was the article linked in the first posting of this thread.
The first appearing article link is below and states;
Mr Jones also said he was 'disappointed and irritated' by actress Joanna Lumley, who spearheaded the campaign to win thousands of Nepalese veterans and their families the right to settle in the UK.

The second as we know headlines;

Minister attacks Joanna Lumley for her 'deathly silence' over investigation into Gurkha charity

The interesting thing is in the comments following the articles, the first are mainly condemning Lumley, the comments in the other article are mainly condemning Labour and Jones.

So if we assume that DM web readers are cast in the same mould, why the difference in the responses to basically similar but differently slated articles on the same day?
Hard to escape the conclusion that they are easily influenced and the Mail panders to their prejudices.
The articles were written by different authors and my guess it that todays second article was reflecting the way the wind was blowing in the other morning papers.

Conning Gurkha Group
Edited to read:
How odd, I know the Daily Mail comments system is a bit flakey but the nine comments that were attached to the article reference on that link have now been reduced to zero comments-strange! Maybe the article will disappear next!

Kevan Jones is not in any way a pleasant or a sensible person. He is however an arch-dissembler - well he's a Labour minister so that is hardly surprising!
