Karzei, slimey backslider?

Of course he is! if you have any knowledge of culture in this part of the world you would have known that this was coming. Belief in anything else would be naivety or ignorance.

The guy is an ungrateful weasel who'd still be in Pakistan, assuming the Taliban wouldn't have assassinated him like they did his father. As soon as he looses his presidential protection he'll be hot tailing it out of Afghanistan.

Is he just backsliding now, now that elections are upcoming?

Cosying up to the Taliban now it seems obvious that they will again be running the country after the withdrawl. A vain attempt to keep his head on his shoulders?
He's not spoken with Obama in 7mths but has been chatting with the Taliban since November apparently.

Karzai engaged in secret talks with the Afghan Taliban - Khaama Press (KP) | Afghan News Agency

Writing is on the wall - he's played us like fools.

Presidential hopeful Dr Abdullah Abdullah has said he will sign security agreement with US/ISAF if he is elected, in to which i read 2 things: 1. Karzai will not be signing the security agreement, and 2. Doc Abdullah is a token candidate.

My money is on Abdul Sayyaf 'winning' the election, which will basically mean that except for spilling a lot of blood and wasting Billions we won't have achieved fcuk all.

Karzei has a point, the afghan intelligence and army repeatedly pointed out the problems with the taliban and pakistan involvementthe cia then got on with the warnings but were ignored.

the kunduz airlift being just the start of it.

pakistan is determined to have a 'friendly' afghanistan run by pashtun when the rest of afghanistan would more likely ally itself to india. british and american troops have been killed by pakistani arms since at least 04. they reopened the camps and trained them how to fight.

pakistan even reached agreements to stop AQ from targetting pakistani installations in return for arms.

the US gave serious consideration to taking on pakistan but seeing as its the fastest growing nuclear armed nation it was deemed problematic to try. - it didn't help that they convinced bush that they were allies. they only delivered AQ suspects to keep bush sweet and on side though no taliban were ever handed over.

Considering the country is split evenly on tribal lines IMO they really should look at creating a new state between pakistan and afghanistan to remove the pashtun from the equation.

he might be a weasel but he never had a chance so you cant blame him for taking what he can before bugging out. he was only a minor player elevated because he was a moderate.

Didn't know 'The Dandy' did Intreps!

He's only following the usual, well-trodden path of Western installed puppets. To whit, become a ruthless dictator and a running sore on the bumcheek of the civilized world, or die.

Was this before or after they asked him to be their ambassador at the UN.

I'm afraid to say that he's right. CENTCOM f**ked it.

This is realpolitik I'm afraid. I've always suspected the real address for Hell is actually planet Earth!

he cant stand in the election but he's got plenty of family in the gov (funny that) so he'll remain a powerful man. he's just setting himself up for the post ISAF future that is just over the horizon.

hopefully that future includes his head being stuck on a pike.

Afghan was a shitehole before we went there, has remained that way during the time there and will remain so long after everyone has gone home. No-one surely has any illusions about this or the reasons why it is so?

Karzei is a product of that time and place, he was never going to be anything else. No spin doctor is ever going to make a Gandhi, a Mandela, a Che Guevara, a whatever out of him.

Hamid Karzei has come out and said it.

He sees no good in the US presence in Afghanistan. Hasn't spoken to Barry in 7mths.
[snip]
Nor Barry to him, if you stop and think about it.

Can't help thinking this is one topic on which the ppair of them see eye to eye, and I don't for one moment imagine Barry has changed his plans for reducing the total US tax he spends on Karzai - oops - I mean on Karzai's country, obviously . . . .

A slimy politician who decides that he wants to talk to the terrorists to achieve a lasting legacy of peace because continuing to fight seems too expensive. finally selling out on major issues, abandoning the people who tried to live peacefully, holding press conferences with known killers and embracing them as brothers and fellow peace-makers. Releasing killers from prison and appeasing the men of violence and even rewarding them with salaries, appointments in government.

I am trying to think of any British Prime Ministers would do such despicable things to secure his own legacy?

In passing observation, you have a bloke installed as leader by foreign powers who have after years of "success" costing billions of dollars and a football stadiums worth of casualties, have now got cold feet and are pulling out leaving him to the tender mercies of a bunch of 13th century zealots. Is there any reason why he wouldn't want to save his skin and eff off to safer climes and pass his days in comfort ?

Karzai's a pragmatist. The Americans are leaving and the Afghans have to accommodate themselves to whatever's coming down the road at them. Whatever happens after the Grand Withdrawal, the Taliban are going to be a loud voice in the country, even if they don't just take back over - which I rather doubt they will, the current resistance to foreigners is far more likely to fragment into competing warlord factions again - and it'd be the act of an imbecile to try to keep them from having their voice heard.

Good luck to 'em, hope it works out, rather fear that it won't. In the best of all possible worlds, when India finally has had enough, they won't stop at Peshawar but will push on to Kabul and Herat. Watch Brother Taleb play his little games with the Sikhs or the Indian Goorkhas.
