KAPE/Recruitment + freebies for the troops.

Here in the Danish equivalent to the TA, we are being encouraged to enter various runs (marathons, half-marathons, fun-runs etc.) both to keep us in the public eye, and to counter the 'Dad's Army' image.

To this end soldiers entering these races are given a half decent set of running gear with a prominent HJV logo, and get their start fees paid.

Personally I think this is a great idea. Everyone gets something out of it, and it's not a major drain on the budget.

Do the TA do something similar?

If not, what do you think of the idea?

I think that I'd love to go back to the days of entering weekend races, but since the only weekends this calendar year without training commitments are bank holidays - and not all of them - it might be another slow year on the trawling through the back section of Runners' World front...

Over the last 2 years we had teams on the Devises - Westminster canoe race, Welsh 1000 (with winning TA indiv & team IIRC) plus random 1/2 and full marathons.

Recruiting result - nil

Publicity - minimal

Training impact - significant! Some of our keenest soldiers dedicating their available spare time to sports rather than training. Fun for them, bad for the unit.

The soldiers enjoyed themselves, but the unit suffered in terms of training. That said, it had value at a time when the unit was short on numbers due to operational commitments and a bit of fun was needed.

We are unlikely to be able to sponsor this level of sporting activity going forward. We are a TA unit, not an outward bound/adventurous sports club. AT will be limited to the usual stuff (one weekend, plus options for skiing, scuba diving expeds etc) and not lots of low key events.

Bit hard to run a recruitment drive alonside the Thames in the middle of the night!

Flippant comments aside, there was no specific recruiting activity. Lots of capbadges and literature available, but no recruiting team. That is part of the problem - it was supposed to be in addition to the core training and as such was not given assets.

In reality, it ended up being instead of the core training for many soldiers, and so we lost out on both counts.

Now, where did I see that before - ah yes: http://www.arrse.co.uk/wiki/TA_Retention_Ideas end of the Pay for section, which is probably why it rarely happens.

It does cost a bit, especially the running clothes, but without the highly visible logo, there's nothing to set our people apart from the rest of the participants.

Even so, most smaller events don't cost a fortune to take part in.
