Anyone else catch the rather delectible Julia Bradbury o BBC2 last night? She's doing four walks in South Africa - last night's was the Transkei coast. This could be interesting.

Did the Transkei walk thing in the 80's - East London to Durban - 300km, about 35 nasty fecking dirty shark filled rivers to swim across with a bergin stuffed into a basha and made into a giant floatng thingy.

Was a "holiday" when I retired from the service - must have been completely fecking crazy - first time I did it with some mates - second time I did it alone.

45kg pack - 4 liters of water a day.

The closest I ever got to was the Otter trail in '82, when I got out. Only 7 rivers, none shark-infested (other than the Storms Mouth). Stood on the suspension bridge and watched a 14' shark swim up the river. 8O

Spent a week-end in Richards Bay and saw two signs on a beach at the mouth of a river - one said 'Beware of Sharks' and the other 'Beware fo Crocodiles'.

I was impressed to see people picnicking on the beach.
