Joining with scars

Hi all,

I'm aware other threads have addressed this question but my situation is quite unique so wondering if anyone can help.

I've just finished my master's degree and am now seriously thinking about going into the army (sent off my initial application today). However, I have three very prominent scars on my left arm that are due to self-harm, but no mental problems are noted on my medical records. I also usually tell people a different (and very plausible) story as to how I got these scars when they ask about them. This episode of self-harm was due to me making a stupid decision when under the influence of drugs/alcohol, and doesn't reflect how I actually deal with pressure in everyday situations. My understanding is that as long as you haven't actually been to see a shrink then you do have a chance of getting through the medical. Do I have a shot at passing or is it just a waste of time?
