I'm pretty sure that the only selection procedure prior to being accepted as a VM is the same as most of other trades.
You'll need to pass a BARB Test (a series of very basic tests on a computer in the Careers Office) to the required standard. You MAY have to provide proof of gaining certain grades at GCSE level in certain subjects, but I don't know for definite what these might be.

Best thing to do is to speak to your careers office mate, they'll have all the information you need.

Nobby, he must already be a squatter, or one of those shiny arrse types. Obviously unaware of what the black covvies are about....

4 GCSEs at grade C or above for all trades in the REME apart from storeman. Or at least it was when I joined...they have probably dropped the standard to being able to spell your name by now judging by some of the mouth breathers that were arriving as I left last year

Its been D's for ages, thats why the foundation course had to be introduced to weed out the nuggets before the real trade training starts.

I'm sure it was a C when I joined up and that was only a few years ago.

According to the other half you really need to have GCSE`s due to the maths test you will sit, the only people that can tell you now is the careers office mate

You will HAVE to have the grades, or equivalent qualifications..
Im goin for VM (A) on the 22nd September,
and on my job brief it says:

Academic Qualifications Required:
GCSE Grade D or above in Maths, Science and English Language.
OR..
First or National Certificate in Engineering/Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
OR..
BTEC National Diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies.
OR..
Intermediate/Advanced GNVQ in Engineering or Electronic Engineering.
OR..
Intermediate GNVQ in Manufacturing.
OR.. City & Guilds/NVQ Level 2 or above in appropriate engineering disciplines may be accepted at the discretion of the senior personnel selection officer REME to complement some, or all, of the GCSEs.

That is what is stated on my Vehicle Mechanic job brief.. If you dont have any of these and your Recruiter says you cant do the job, then is it worth goin tocollege and retakin the GCSEs that you need if you really want the job? Retake Science get a D and its all good.
