Joining the TA after service with the regs

#1
Hi guys,

I left the Regs about 3 months ago and regret doing it. Though civvy street offers me lots that i need i miss the Army. I understand that you need to wait for a certain amount of time before re-enlisting for the regs, does this apply for the TA?

Many thanks, Donnie

I am not aware of any restrictions.

In the TA?

If you are getting a bum rush off one unit, go to the next one down the road.

nah my local TA unit is B squadron Royal Wessex Yeomanry, i have not approached them yet as i thought i would get the heads up from you guys first. It was my Platoon commander who threatened me with the Waiting for re-enlistment thing. O yeah........ whats the sort of likley-hood of going on Ops with a TA tankie unit?

Guaranteed - if you volunteer for it.

Not if you left 3 months ago. You should be able to get your rank back - if they have a vacancy and your regular service should count towards your bounty.

How long were you in for?

Donnie,

Your PC was talking bollox. If you want to go back into the Regs, just call up your local ACIO and they'll get you back in with minimum of fuss (providing you weren't asked to leave in the first place) and it'll be like you never left. Check with your ACIO, but if you go back within 6 months of leaving (applies to quite a few peeps apparently) it may count as unbroken service.

If you want to stay in civvie street and get the best of both worlds the TA is far and away a better option than mobilising as a Reg Reserve. I'm guessing you were in the Rifles? There are Coys from 6 & 7 Rifles throughout the South. Have a look here:
6 RIFLES
7 RIFLES

If you want to stick with Yeomanry lot (each to their own), I'm guessing you'll have to learn to be a tankie at Bovington before you become deployable and I don't know how many bods the cavalry TA send out on Ops. In the infantry you'll not only be immediately eligible to go, but the demand for trained infantrymen is such that any offer to mobilise will be immediately seized on!

Good luck with what ever you choose.

you have the chance to look around at everything on offer. you will be told that every regt is better than the next, and you will be told that only this or that regt sends guys on ops. all bollocks, and little to do with what you should join for. what do you want to do with your spare time and how far are you prepared to travel?

go to every unit within your distance and speak to them, see what the do, speak to the guys etc etc. if you like them, and the role suits you, go for it.

every unit sends guys on ops...including TA cav

I think you have to wait a month before you can join the TA from reg service. (Continuation of work if less than a month.) If you are getting fobbed off - go to a different unit or try a specialist unit.

In the olden days (pre JPA) you had to leave for one day before you could renlist. Now under JPA the system will not allow you to join before the 3 month period due to issues with pay. This is being looked at as we speak but it is currently a bit of an issue with ex regular trying to join the TA. If you are interested in joining the TA you should ask about the "special conditions" for ex regulars which allow reduced commitment for bounty and reduced training including MATTs. Not suggesting you would not want to be fully involved but it allows personnel to move back into it gently but in your case you seem eager to get back at it.

Oooh I know this one! May I draw your attention too DIN01-014 :

the gist is you can join the TA after leaving regular service and be granted a relaxed call out liability for 3 years from the date of the termination of your regular service ( meaning you cant be mobilised unless you ask for 3 years after you leave). You also get a reduced training requirement ( differnet MATT requirements) , this is mainly aimed at people who are sorting thier lives out I recon though , if youre keen you can do as much as you like.

Bit relevant to the origional poster : This scheme applies to any soldier even if he does not join the TA in his origional capbadge or trade , you can also apply for FTRS and/or mobilisation, but that will void the 3 years "grace" period if you choose to do so. You will also be eligible for bounty on the basis of the reduced training requirements.

So bar the 3 months pay issuse I recon youre in buisness mate.

Also if you rejoin up to the regulars you maybe able to claim the Retention Bonus, I would recommend you speak to an Army Careers Officer

Hey just for my 2pence worth.............

My ex joined the TA 3 weeks after leaving the regs, kept his number, pay, etc etc and did not have to do the 1B training though he did have to do the CMSR. He was a tankie and was joining us Loggies.

(He quit a couple of weeks ago...apparently civvie life beats army life???? pahhhh what does he know!!)

Have fun x
