Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Im looking to become a Driver as part of the RLC. Have I made a mistake or is it a good job to have? Getting mixed opions from everwhere!!
  2. Its not necessarily a mistake, what are your reasons for that trade?

What have you heard that is so bad?
  3. I just think that id be better suited in that role. Just people saying that you dont join the Army to drive, you join to fight(frontline) etc.
  4. You will be fighting if you are in a Combat Logistic Patrol (CLP) in Afghanistan.

If Driver is something you really want to do then do it. If you don't like it you can always transfer into something else.

If you are not sure what you want to do then have a good look at different trades before you decide.
  5. As a driver you should get your B,C and C+E as well as hazmat before you finish your phase 2 training. You may also get others such as the RTCH license, should you decide the army is not for you at least at the end of your minimum four year you will have qualifiactions that could help you get a job on civvie street.
  6. As others have said, nothing wrong with RLC Driver trade. Most are good honest hard working soldiers. You will work hard, see operations at the pointy end, get shit scared, tell some war stories, meet good mates. Go for it, you can always transfer later if it does not meet your aspirations.
  7. If you do decide to be a driver, and then want something a little more challenging, you could always re-trade to Driver Communication Specialist and get even more good civilian quaifications. Oh, you also get paid a lot more at the JNCO level.
  8. Or even Driver/Air Despatcher. But only if you like travel, Loads of money.
Flying round for hours at a time in the back of Hercules.
  9. Get some loads built you skivving git
  10. 1 day off in months and some joker want loads rigging!
But back to the original post, he/she could do a lot worse than 47AD.
If you want to actually drive trucks, we do more millage than most major units.
