Joining RE regiment as a reserve

Hello,

I’m after a bit of advise if possible please.

I’m interested in joining an RE regiment with no engineering back ground. Would anyone be able to tell me what opportunities there W ould be for me? I know that I would initially go through the combat engineering course, but after that what would there be for me to do? I know that there is not as much opportunities in the reserves as the regulars due to it being part time etc

Any help/advice would be appreciated

Thanks

You do not need an enginering background to join a mainstream RE Reserve unit. You will be trained as a combat engineer; don't worry that will give you enough to do.

I get that that will keep me busy but combat engineering is the base of your training. I thought that you could branch off and do some other things. Just not sure what’s on offer.
Once you pass that training what sort of things is it that you get to do as a RE reserve?

A good mate of mine is a FTRS with the local RE unit. He was on the recruiting side of things for a while.
I know he's done Iraq and Afghanistan, Canada, USA, Malawi (shithole apparently) Belize and a few other places.
As a reserve though you'll mainly focus on the core RE combat engineering stuff, bridge building etc. I know that some people branch out into the comms side of things though.

Perfect thank you. I have 2 completely different options near by that I am interested in. Medics and REs. Couldn’t be any more different, but I have an interest with both. Just not sure on the best route to choose

I was troop signaller for second trade. Interesting work and it kept me busy.

If you want an easier time, joining the RE as a C3S operator is an option. Otherwise stay as a fieldy (Combar Engineer). As for the medic, stuff you can still do medic courses as an RE. When I was regular you could actually do the same course as the Medics, but it was condensed over a shorter time period - the RMA course - and then go off to work in a medical centre afterwards, alongside RAMC medics. we had an RLC reserve on our RMA course, but someone else will have to say if the RMA course is still running or not. But this could be an option to combine the two.

In another thread you want to be a CMT?
As for the RE avoid Geo as a reserve, unless you deploy you will never get the same trade training.

Op.
Whereabouts are you in the country?
I know in South Wales the engineer unit is the Royal Mons. And the medics in Cardiff are Paras.

There’s also a detachment of the Royal Mons in Bristol, some medics at Keynsham between Bristol and Bath, and a Commando engineer troop co located with us at Bath, if you’re anywhere nearby.

Or, if you fancy something really different, very interesting, and probably one of the coolest jobs in the army, there’s us, 255 TACP Battery RA, specialising in Close Air Support, with lots of travel thrown in (usually). Feel free to get in touch.
(I know, I know, I couldn’t help myself )
