Never liked Reid. 12 years in Jockland honed my understanding of what a good Jock is ( many of them, can't be beaten!) and the ones who generated the quote " There's nothing more fascinating than watching a Scotsman on the make." Reid is more than on the make, he makes my iguana look positively sociable.

Yep, really on the make - £50k

So much more on the make than that other Scots bloke who got a government department privatised and then made a mint from it. What was his name again - John Minor?

yep £50k in uk account, on which tax is paid, and £450,000 in numbered swiss account. I'm not saying that is the case, but there are ways to be 'tax efficient' but one still needs to declare some ernings to the tax man or he will get curious.

Have I missed the point here - Scots bloke - Major/Minor?? Scotland has enough of its own Tw*ts without being lumbered with any others.

If we are talking about the last and probably worse Conservative PM of all time - in his defence he never claimed to be an out and out communist who believed in banning nuclear bombs and unbridled union power. Unlike the good Doctor of course!

Nice attempt to turn the spotlight on the common enemy again Sven.

Sven, why is the fact that John Major's a cnut relevant to this discussion? Or are you attempting to imply that there is nothing wrong with what Reid's doing because it is less wrong than John Major who was a 'Tory'? I don't think any of us have ever suggested that politicians are anything other than generally appalling, whatever party they belong to.

Perhaps you would care to address the subject in question instead of settling back into your comfortable role of New Labour apologist.

Sven cannot respond to my request for more information because there is no more to say. Major retired as an MP in 2001, and then took up his directorships. He did not profit from sale of government departments while he was PM or an MP.

As opposed to T Blair esq who signed up to human rights legislation knowing full well that his missus was one of the leading lights in that field - kerching!!

Whatever the drift on this thread to Tory Vs Labour wrongs.
1. There is nothing new about this.
Take your pick!

2. Both parties are 'guilty' of this.
3. The Mail is full of shjt.
4. I have time for Dr John Reid if only because the media so blatantly misquotes him on the shots being fired in Afghanistan quote.

An excellent documentary on this subject (albeit from the US perspective) is:

If other socialist men and women of the people are anything to go by, then the 50K is only the start of it. The appalling socialist millionaires daughter, Ms. Hewitt, picked up 100K from Alliance-Boots as a 'Consultant' despite having been Health Secretary only a few months earlier. She then signed up with BT for an undisclosed sum - a few more of those and you are soon talking serious money.

Does anyone believe that these MPs have sparkling and indispensable skills that cannot be found elsewhere? No, most Liarbour MPs have never had a proper job and are taken onboard by the private sector for nothing more than the contents of their address book. They are filling their boots before they lose their seats and nice little perks and sink back into the (deserved) obscurity from whence they came.

BTW, Alec_Lomas, which 'Alastair' has been 'investing' in Zimbabwe, I'm dying to know.

BobThe Dog, that's the name of the game. You don't pick up yer paycheque until you are way off the firing line. Cool for everyone concerned, and "legal". Unless the dopey cnuts who have been had start taking issue....

The point I am making is that ex politicians of both hues have always used (abused?) their former positions to seize pecunary advantage for themselves or their family. Trying to spin it as just one colour or the other is blatant sillyness.

Where did I say he did?

Did Major have anything to do with the sale of Dera. Did he subsequently make money from the company?

It's rather simple really. for a definition of democracy see The Bilderberg Group ( and for all nay-sayers, it's real, very real, and interestingly Dennis Healey, darling old socialist, was one of the original frontmen). For politics, read dancing on the end of a string, and for reward, read directorship, lecture circuit, "high" public office. For someone who turns honest and tries to spill the beans, read dead. Easy really, isn't it? Want your kids to get somewhere in this world? Teach them to be cnuts. It's the way forward.
