Does anyone know why Sergeants and above wear a jimmy above their stipes on mess dress and 2s? I have tried googling it to no avail. Thanks.
Thanks Polar, that may be the case, however do you know why it is only seniors and not juniors? There must be some story behind this rather than it just being the done thing when you put your jackets in for tailoring
It's a badge of appointment for (Staff) Sergeants. Worn because of their position. Same as ADCs wearing an aguillette, SSMs carrying a pace stick or even Lineys wearing a leather belt.
IIRC it was originally used to differentiate between substantive and acting sergeants. That has clearly fallen by the wayside somewhere down the line.
