A lot of the smaller island depencies are reliant on offshore banking for economic survival. It'll be interesting to see what happens as you can bet the Caymans will also jump if independence looks rosier.
And what does Blue Sophos as our very own resident Jersey have to say on the matter? Will he be allowed to enter Arrse without a valid visa?
On a slightly more serious note, best of luck to them. I was there last week, the place is delightful more so because it is a Europe free zone.
Sensible answer for current affairs - how long is an independent Jersey going to last with the massive EU trade embargo on? None of the other major European countries like their little tax doging either, so they'd get little sympathy from anyone else.
And for when this gets moved to the Naafi - fantastic. Even our reduced armed forces could invade and conquer Jersey. And with their track record of collaborating we won't get much of an insurgency.
Firstly you bunch of oiks, Jersey isn't considering becoming independent from Britain: it is considering giving Britain its independence from Jersey (and would probably take the other Baliwick with it).
The Channel Islands were properties of the Crown over a century before William the Bastard decided that the only way of changing his name (Deed Poll not being around in those days) was to invade and crush the smelly poofters in England. Which he did and then became known as William the Conqueror.
A lot of the banking money in the Channel Islands comes from the UK and EU: but not all of it. They are also the global insurance capital of the world, and reinsurance premiums can flow from anywhere, to anywhere (even North Korea remits reinsurance premiums). The days of the Channel Islands being a tax haven (i.e. somewhere to hide your money) are long gone, and the islands are now on the OECD and IMF 'White List': if Germany (or any other country) asks it for account details, then the islands will cheerfully send them the details of every single German passport holder or resident with an account in the islands.
As for becoming third world little backwaters because the EU won't like them: look at Switzerland, Monaco, Lichtenstein etc. They are all really poor aren't they? Oh hang on a moment, they are effing minted so that argument is a pile of bolloxs as well.
