It's official-Gen. Mattis nominated to be CinC of CENTCOM

Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates announced today that the President has nominated Marine Corps Gen. James N. Mattis to serve as commander, U.S. Central Command and for reappointment to the rank of general. Gen. Mattis is currently serving as commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command, Norfolk, Va.
ok jumpin, is this appointment good or bad? Central command covers where, who, any bearing on what our lot are doing ?
I admit some bias but even so I am encouraged. He is a combat infantry leader through and through, reported to have good rapport with Petraeus, and has a good regard for allies ( who are willing to fight). Centcom is the US "combatant command" responsible for all US military operations in the middle east and SW Asia so he is the guy Petraeus will look to for all US forces and support in Afhan.

Mattis is known for his un-PC comments and there has been a lot of speculation about how short leash by Gates and the White House,
We also have strong maritime links with CENTCOM including embedded personnel at COMUSNAVCENT's HQ in Bahrain:

United Kingdom Maritime Component Command (UKMCC)
RN website said:
As the United Kingdom's Maritime Component Commander (UKMCC), under Commander Joint Operations in Northwood, UK, Commodore Tim Fraser commands Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships in the Middle East. Additionally he serves under the Commander US Fifth Fleet as the Deputy Commander, Combined Maritime Forces in the US CENTCOM Area of Responsibility...
Here's the Daily Telegraph's take on the appointment:

General who said it was 'fun to shoot people' takes over US Central Command

Does his photo remind anyone else of someone who packed pearl-handled revolvers in a war movie?
