Itchy Combat Helmets

#1
Got issued a MK6 helmet on cadet course and now we've hit the stage where we have to wear it all the time, I cut the piece of string out as that knot pissed me off in seconds.
Problem is now my head is directly in contact with the top of the inside of the helmet and it itches like fcuk!!
What do you guys recommend to line the inside of the helmet?

I have a big head, and cadet kit doesn't always arrive in the size you really need, the string would be ok but is there anyway to knot it so it doesn't dig into your skull?

I can't say for privacy reasons, i'd get seriously bollocked if i did, it's more intense and fieldcraft based than all the others we do, which for Air Cadets is sayin a lot, hence the lack of knowledge in a lot of areas.
