Is the lack of military service the cause of our very poor politicians?

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. The 'want' to become an MP in the first place should automatically ban them from being one.

MPs should be nominated by their communities, paid very well for a fixed term stint so they don't become institutionalised and part of the Westminster machine.

  2. You may, I don't. Far too well educated.

  3. So just when they've learnt how to do the job they have to move on? Well that does work so very well for the military
  4. The Defence select committee or something like came out to BATUS a few years ago and were all in uniform with the House of Commons cap badge. I had just walked out of the mess and saw what I thought was one of the lads walking round with hands in pockets and no beret on from a hundred or so metres away. Cue me screaming at the top of my voice for fore mentioned scruffy twat to sort their self out! They put their beret on and removed there hands from their pockets and toddled off.

We had a meeting that afternoon with them and a very pleasant looking young lady was telling her colleagues that she had been 'shouted at' after lunch for not being correctly dressed. I didn't have the heart to tell her it was me but a few of the lads gave me knowing glances.

  5. Somebody above made mention of the proliferation of internal Independent Parliamentary Standards committees.
Clearly the level of education amongst MPs has gone really downhill , otherwise they might have spotted that IPSO, IPSA etc mean 'by with or from themselves' (or close, anyway).
  6. Seen on the wall of a university toilet:- "For a degree in media studies, tear off"

It’s quite possible. Sinn Fein have a rep for being very good constituency MPs (and MLAs).

  9. Its probably already been said in this thread but 'a country gets the politicians it deserves'. If you look through the ranks of the MP`s you`ll find a good reflection of the people they represent. You`ll get the odd one who is hard working and principled, but by and large the rest are made up of the well meaning but ineffective , the idle, the dim, the greedy, the selfish, and the downright cuntish. A lot like society in general....including the military.

  10. Surely not ALL MPs were elected by Manchester?

  11. That's a hell of a statement, after what I went through after Leman brothers went down, taking down the financial sector , and it filtered down to my neck of the woods, construction. From 2008 until 2016 when I retired, I was out more than in work, with bills, a mortgage etc, Did I deserve the cnutwitterys playing silly buggers with the economy, corrupt politicians, greedy bankers, the sheer lunacy of the EU and Blair sending my mates to their deaths on a massive ego tripped lie, DIF, and neither did thousands of other folk, who only wanted decisive strong leadership, and look at what we got. A three ring circus. No I F*****G didn't deserve that.

Edit to add:- George Orwell got it spot on in his novel 1984, "Two minutes hate" only today in 2017, directed at the total wastes of skin in Westminster.

One doesn't wear gongs on overcoats!

To be honest its the lack of any career outside of the political greasy pole that is the problem, there are even party leaders with no real working experience and being an intern to an Eu organisation doesn't count as real work.
