I recently came across an article about fascism and it was going on about how after comparing a number of different past fascist governments they found 14 common threads 'that link them in recognizable patterns of national behavior and abuse of power.' Here they are below. And is it just me or does this remind you of New Labour somewhat? Okay I must admit that they fail abysmally on points 1, 2, 4 and 5. Although Broon has been making some move towards British nationalism as a way of diverting people from his Scottish-ness and how they've fucked up the country. All the other points though they're banged to rights though I'd say. Identification of enemies/scapegoats? Check. A controlled mass media? I'd say spin and systematically denying access to anyone that they don't like count. Obsession with national security? Just look at ID cards and how many of out personal liberties they've chipped away at or wanted to. Religion and ruling elite tied together? Well they seem to support practically any religious crank that doesn't like us or watch out if you want to tell a joke about Judaism or Islam. Power of corporations protected, Power of labor suppressed or eliminated? They seem to have ditched the unions and defected to people like the Business Roundtable, well except when they want some more funding that is. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts? You could reasonably argue that I'd think. Obsession with crime and punishment? Oh hell yes. Rampant cronyism and corruption? Peerages for Loans anyone. And Fraudulent elections? Well they do seem ever so keen on postal ballots even after the past shambles and that it would disgrace a banana republic according to the investigating judge. So. New Labour, on balance a fascist party or simply incompetent. Which is it?
