There was also official Irish Government nonsense towards various ex servicemen and their families with qualifying criteria for grants,schemes etc Men who had served in the RN or on the convoys were not deemed qualified enough for grants or finance for small fishing boats in the 50s. While cronies without a modicum of sea training from anywhere got grants and boats without a hitch. There is a Dail debate from the 50s about it
