Irish general election

I'll grant that I was incorrect in asserting that Gaelic was only spoken in the Highlands and Islands - language is a complex thing and you've correctly pointed out that it covered much of mainland Scotland as well in terms of being a functional means of communication. The use of the word "never" would obviously be wrong - if I had said it. Which I didn't, but I did say "only" so admittedly that reads as the same thing.

But my main point remains - just one percent of the population NOW speaks it. There is NO justification for trying to revive it in areas where it is simply irrelevant now.

In layman's terms, what's the implication ?

Eire will be without a PM as soon as Leo offers his resignation, possibly this evening?
Sounds like a stalemate. If they can't come to an agreement, perhaps between two parties, the only way to resolve the stalemate may be to run the G.E. again? There's discussion on these threads below but feck knows.

So that was #GE2020...so what will the next government look like?

No he continues on as caretaker

he has said that he will go to Washington DC for St.Patricks Day as Taoiseach so don’t expect it to be sorted soon

Leo Varadkar (FG) - 36 For, 107 against, 16 absentions
Michéal Martin (FF) - 41 For, 97 against, 19 absentions
Mary Lou McDonald (SF) - 45 For, 84 against, 29 absentions
Eamon Ryan (GP) - 12 For, 115 against, 28 absentions

Why are the totals slightly different?

Sinn Fein (SF) have come a long way in their attempt to move away for their terror supporting past as the Political Wing of the IRA, and make themselves more 'mainstream'.

I never ever thought I would see the day when any member of the Shinners would be actively engaged in recruiting for the 'Crown Forces':

A bold move that will upset hard-line Republicans, but the Shinners must reckon it will win them more votes than they risk losing.

Varadkar's mask has been removed and people even in Ireland can see him for the little EU subservient weasel he is and that he focuses more on Headline issues that echo his name across Europe. As for Fianna Fail (FF), they don't offer much different the Fine Gael (FG).

Whilst Sinn Fein might be popular in the polls - I see this more as a protest indication, as I can't see Ireland swinging to Left-Wing Socialism and given they require 80 seats to achieve any majority but are only fielding about half that number of Candidates - a stand-alone Sinn Fein government cannot be formed.

Will FF or FG form a coalition with SF? They both say they won't but let's see how this pans out next week.
They're unhappy about the ratio of officers.

Forgetting their own role in ensuring that Catholics wouldn't want to join.

Come home to a real fire, join the RUC.

To be honest its been mooted on this site for a while that things weren't going the way he wanted. If its nothing more than a protest against the two parties and taxes a rerun of the GE could allow SF to contest the remaining seats. This could be a test of the protest vote nationally.
Perhaps this time the politicians will realise they are there to serve the whole electorate and not themselves!
Ha if only!

Drew Harris delivered a big "F**k You" to SF/IRA today. The current Garda Commissioner, Drew is also a former RUC/PSNI officer whose father was murdered by the IRA. (Alwyn Harris was RUC)

Basically he said, "Yep, Sinn Fein is still run by the IRA Army Council, PSNI think that too, as do British Intelligence."

Mary-Lou McFatbitch is NOT pleased. Father Leo Vereker is delighted.

Whats the RoI equivalent of British Intelligence ? Surely there must be eyebrows raised in their quarters ?
Any gentlemen from the Republic able to answer ?

The Vatican?
A bit closer to the truth than you may realise. Priests are generally very well educated in the various colleges.
The information gathering capabilities of the confessional is not to be sneezed at.
