Invisible spam, why?

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I've been meaning to ask this question for a while, but can anyone tell me why spammers hide their spam?

There have been quite a few occasions where pages in the wiki are apparently blank, until you open them with the edit function and see that they are filled with spam.

There must be a logical reason for them to do this, but I'm buggered if I know what it is.

Any IT-gurus who know the answer?

The answer is that the spam is hidden to humans but that search engines pick up on it. This is therefore a very effective way for spammers to boost their google ranking.
  3. And how exactly would you know this, Boss? ;)
