In the 90's I had occasion to attend a function at the Licensed Victuallers Hall in London, sitting miles away from the 'Top Table'.

After the 'cigars', I was sitting chatting to another lowly functionary when, there was a tap on the shoulder and, there stood General Sir Michael Rose (Retd),being pursued by the President of the LV Assoc. He then grabbed a loose chair and we had a good 10 minutes chinwag, much to the disappointment of some luminaries attending, lovely man and,a soldiers soldier !
He used to take his poor BG (who obviously had to be carrying) on a run every day!

As an aside, I went to one of those LV do's as a copper, (guest of my mate, a publican) and as a guest I was told that I didn't have to stand a round, and thank God for that, because the alcohol tab for our table was massive, one of the biggest bills I have ever seen. (Beaten only by a mad night in the Cafe Royale in Monte Carlo with a dozen friends on my honeymoon.)

You really are strange what were you doing with a dozen mates on your honeymoon?

It was a a grand affair that cost me nothing. One of our group of friends owns a villa in Villafranch_Sur Mer, just a short boat trip to Monte Carlo and has a £million+ Sunseeker speedboat, yacht thing, so our wedding day was based on the date that the villa and boat were free, (he normally hires the boat out for € 5000 a day) and it was quite natural to have the whole gang aboard for a holiday/honeymoon.

No different from folk that get married in hot foreign climes and invite friends and family to the wedding/ honeymoon. Not really that strange.

lovely little place Villefranche, once drove a landrover up onto the end of the quay, over the front end of a fishing boat in 1970. 2 Days later, was fined for speeding around the Casino square in said landrover. The big grey ship was anchored off and, the Grimaldi's were coming to visit so a Guard of Honour was required.

Nobody on board had ever done arms drill with the SLR so, the POGI spoke to my boss and,I got lemoned to get them up to scratch...went without a hitch except for, a detour that went past the showers, lots of hairy matelots surprised to be walking down to their mess, with towels over shoulders when, around the corner came the guest party, the Commander (E) wasn't amused .
