Interest in the RAC

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi

I've been looking into joining the RAC however am a bit lost on where to start with which regiment. I understand there are 2 different roles that the regiments undertake which is obviously one factor, however I noticed that there are regional recruiting areas for each regiment. Should I start by looking into my regional regiment or is this not the way it is done in the RAC, please note I am not looking to join HHC.

  2. Id speak to Brave-Coward on here.
  3. The RAC run a PO visit at the Director RAC HQ in Bovington. Really good fun and may give you a better sense of where you want to go after that. For what its worth I'm from the Westcountry and have been encouraged to apply for a distinctly Northern regiment.
  4. Freddie,

You are correct there are two main RAC roles. These are Formation Reconnaissance and Armour (i.e. tanks). I won't go into anymore detail as you can find some decent unbiased information on the Army Internet site or on here with a quick search. The RAC (and HCav) also currently provide the army's specialist CBRN and mounted ceremonial capabilities.

Broadly speaking many or even most RAC officers do not come from the traditional recruiting areas from which their regiments recruit their soldiers, although some do.

If you are interested in joining the RAC as an officer, I would recommend getting your army careers advisor to send you on one of the RAC potential officers' courses at Bovington. This is designed to show people the extent of the RAC, introduce them to some newly commissioned RAC officers and help point them toward a regiment which has spaces in that year and which the potential officer would most suit, in terms of role and regimental personality.
