Any ideas what it is that makes this guy so outstanding. He does it on a shoestring (I support when I can - more could do so!). Is it having been a soldier, rapport with the men - what?

BG Brooks still carries a grudge but he has been overruled. Initially he had denied Yon permission to embed. Yon has made alot of friends with his reporting and is a great advocate for what we are trying to accomplish.

I think it is as you surmised that he is respected for his military service, the quality of his reporting and his fearlessness. Not many journalists go into harms way and the one's that do are special.
