There used to be a Sherwood Rangers TA unit at Carlton, but I think now QRL.
Tis still Sherwood Rangers. 17/21L used to recruit from Nottinghamshire so Queens Royal Lancers is the answer.

Yes QRL up in Catterick at the moment, if your looking at getting in as a Re-enlister I take it you werent a tankie before as if you were you would have the chance of going back in your old unit. Take your discharge paperwork into your ACIO and explain why you want to re-join and they will send your special enlistment paperwork up to Glasgow. If your looking to get into a different trade then it is more difficult. It all depends on places available, what was on your discharge paperwork (queens regs and exemplary service) and how long youve been out. Might have to go hrough the whole process again depending on time out but thats up to MCM desk officer. Go look in training wing Ive answered posts on this recently in there.

Stranger things have happened, obviously the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act will be in overdrive with RI's. It all depends on Waiting periods and if you were convicted if they are spent. Speak to the Recruiters who will advise and assess.

quick question on this if you dont mind guys,

im looking to join the army as member of the RAC, preferably as tank crewman. ideally in the challenger.

i live in manchester so does this have a bearing on which regiment(s) i can join? -

Nope, you can join what you want, saying that a few lads in the QRL are from Manchester, one was in the local paper recently, lives round corner from me.

If you have a preference of a Regiment due to family connections etc then mention it on your interviews with the Recruiter and he'll put it on your soldier selection record. When you have your PSO interview at ADSC they will take this into account and recommend it when you go through Bovington. Most of the time though it depends which Regiments are needing manpower for ops etc just like the footprint infantry Battalions.
One of the major benefits of being in your local Regiment is that where ever you are posted you will always have plenty of blokes going back to your home town.

Your local regiment is the Kings Royal Hussars who are on Challenger 2. It does make sense to join your local unit if they meet the criteria ( challenger 2) that you are looking for. As others have said, operational reasons can result in the army deciding which regiment you go in but if you ask for your local regiment you have a much greater chance of getting what you ask for. The army still strongly believes in "recruiting area's" and a request for your local unit will have more "clout"

My bold. I concur. I recently discovered that a friend of mine is actually the younger sister of a bloke I served with in 15/19H.

She told me that his son, her nephew, decided a year or two back to join up and join a Recce Regt. Because he did not ask for the LD, his by birthright, they earmarked him for 9/12L, who obviously are understaffed ... I cannot think why.

He was lucky: did his knee and they offered him a medical discharge. Phew, that was a close shave.

(Closes hatch and awaits incoming when the 9/12L read this.)
