infantry or royal artillery?

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. hi peeps, im looking to join up soon, im pondering whether to join the infantry or the royal artillery? im really caught between the two? any advice?
  2. Infantry..
  3. Decide for yourself, what is right for others might not be right for you. Read up on your job choices and think long and hard.
  4. Joined as Junior Leader Royal Artillery in 1986,didn't like it from day one,two years later I transferred to the infantry, loved it couldn't have asked for more, running round like a idiot. However had mates who had excellent careers in the RA.Think its all down to personal preference.
Unlike back in those days you now have the magic of the Internet and can get a far better view of what each different Regiment can offer from the comfort of your arm chair as opposed to a few well worn leaflets and a couple of totally outdated videos the local army careers office had.
Wherever you decide to go you will no doubt have some totally shit days and some of the best days of your life.
    Good luck. :thumleft:

  12. As been said above you have to make the decision yourself, you may find in your local ACIO that theres Recruiters from the infantry or RA to chat with. Also try and get on a LAL Insight course (unfortunately most are fully booked until later on in the year). Having served in both Armoured Infantry and RA units I would say that you need to be very robust and physically and mentally fit in both and in many cases most RA Regiments are used as Infantry in some theatres and roles and very challenging. Plenty of research is the key, you will get p*ss takers on here but on the whole if you look through the threads you will find out most of the answers your looking for in the Infantry and RA forumns.
  13. Armoured/Mechanised Infantry 81mm mortar?? combo
  14. Difficult to bayonet babies with a big cannon.

RA offers perhaps more variety of jobs as it is a big Corps.
    Infantry is more specialised.

Me? I did RA and then Inf. Prefered Inf, some don't. Go with your intuition. Loads of good advice here, but read both forums closely.
  15. Join the royal engineers and do everything
