This is a picture of the memorial to the lads who were murdered at or near Ballygawley in 73, 83, and 88. Thanks whoever posted the pic and also whoever erected the memorial. It does describe the 88 lads as being from 1Li which is correct. It sadly incorrectly gives them the rank of Rifleman which they werent, they were all privates and uses the "New Rifles" Cap Badge which isnt today a regiment yet and certainly wasnt in 88. That apart, thanks for the picture!
Now is the time of year when all those in the Bn then and others like me having only left a month or two before recall the tragic loss of so many young lads, all if I recall recently out of the under 18 platoon and keen as mustard.

Does no one know who posted this? I have e mailed the regimental sec and he would like to know its exact location, X metres from Y road junction etc would be great. This is to investigate who raised the memorial, I have cut and pasted the letter here:

    Dear Mr Ugly,

Thank you for your email. Like you we are glad to see a memorial be are
confused as to its origins; the use of Rfm and of the old Somerset and
Cornwall Cap badge (not the new Rifles one) leads us to believe that this
may be some sort of unofficial memorial, probably erected with good
intentions. To allow us to investigate further though can you please
confirm the actual location of the memorial.

You should be aware that here have been some changes due to a certain
normality returning to Northern Ireland which has/will involve the
resiting of some memorials. Be assured though that there would be no
change to existing memorials to update them for the new Regiment; that
would be wholly inappropriate. You should note that there is also a
memorial plaque and trees planted in the old Light Division Depot at
Winchester where there is a memorial service held each year.

Once again thank you for bringing this to our attention.

    Best Regards

If any one can help I would like to pass on the info!

    P.S. The memorial is appreciated!
