Corrections Secretary Tim Reisch has returned from an 11-month leave of absence he took to attend the U.S. Army War College.

Reisch, a 26-year veteran of the South Dakota Army National Guard, earned a master's degree in strategic studies while at the school in Carlisle Barracks, Penn.

"I am returning to state government energized, and better prepared to execute my duties as secretary of corrections," Reisch said in a news release.

Reisch holds the rank of colonel and is a former commander of the 153rd Engineer Battalion.

South Dakota State Penitentiary Chief Warden Doug Weber served as interim secretary during Reisch's absence.
