I am writing a letter to introduce my self to a US officer I expect to be meeting later this year: What is the correct way of writing his rank name and post noms?

He is an Army National Guard Lieutenant.

  2. Check you PMs.

  3. If you are the same rank or higher address him by his first name.

  4. I didn't know you were coming to see me.

    Officially:

1LT John Smith or 2LT John Smith, obviously depending on rank.

That would go on the address. When actually typing the letter, you could say "LT Smith", or "Lieutenant Smith". You never see the '1st' or '2nd' outside of an actual title such as on the address, it's never used when addressing someone directly.
