In my very minor public school back in the early fifties, we had a teacher who would have been today imprisoned for assault. Owing to the wartime call-up of younger staff, this old relic who had reputedly at one time played rugger for Wales, had carried on well into retirement and taught languages. In a test, those who had made one mistake would receive one clip around the ear, two mistakes two clips and so on; it may be imagined the fate of the thickos in the class with all the questions incorrect. Amazing though, as the same test was repeated, how well those duffers' answers improved although with sore ears! He would give long lectures on morality and honour to us upholding one boy in particular as being the epitome of those attributes although the latter subsequently suffered a prison sentance for "misidentity" of property! In a strange way though, it is now considered by us elderly survivors of this master to have taken an inverse pride in being members of his regime despite being a vicious old sod, he was "our" vicious old sod!
