how long must a UK govt department keep email records ?

  1. I have had a difference of opinion with a Government department, & I am curious to know how long they must keep records of any emails they have sent me.

    Does anyone know the official figure?
  2. Might help if you gave an indication of what the records (roughly) pertain to. I imagine different departments, ie Transport/Finance etc, may have different timeframes.
  3. These emails were internal police mails
  4. Normal business = 3 years
    Banking = 5 years
    Govt Depts - no idea
