Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Owing to the fact that I'm old and bold and slow in the head I'd like some advice.
It appears some chinese gentleman is using my hotmail account to flog ugg boots FFS!!
I keep getting message failure notices from the postmaster at hotmail,
could anyone advise me what to do?

Steady now it's not the NAAFI.

  2. You could report it to hotmail administrators, but usually the problem disappears within a day or so, as these sharks move on very quickly.I guess he has used your email address to spam others, and you are simply receiving the reject notices from servers where the recipients are no longer registered.
  3. Ordinaryforces,

    Have changed your password yet?

  4. report it to hotmail and change the password
  5. Thanks for the tips...I'll start to sort it out
  6. Its unlikely that the chinese gentleman has actually hacked your email account, simply used your email address for spamming, rather than risk his own being blacklisted. Its email spoofing.

Still be on the safe side to change the password to your account.

What you are seeing is the responses from mail servers where the addressee cannot be found, its a common method for spammers.
  7. It might mean that your Hotmail account has been compromised. Do you have a simple password that could be guessed? Or have you logged into a site and used your email address and the same password for that account?

Or have you used an internet cafe somewhere?

Check your "Sent" box to see if they have been careless and left a trace of their work.

Change your password now and make it a strong one; letters, numbers and a capital letter will make it stronger.

  8. Had the same problem with my yahoo account and can confirm that its embarrassing when people start getting crap purportedly from you.

Spoke to the IT gimp at the office and he showed me how its done, took exactly 1 minute to send an email to his own address without logging into an account. He stated that their is not a lot you can do about it and they have servers all over the place doing this automatically

So as suggested previously change your password and email everyone that's important that someone is spamming on your address and to delete.

    It really is annoying
  9. Or amusing, dependant on which end of it you are on ??

My brother was for about a week inundated with people mailing him to say they did NOT need fck*ng viagra tablets.

Quick password swap did the trick.

    msr LE

  11. my solution to this problem:

delete all the contacts and simply use that email to log into / register on the internet.

create a separate email account for private / real life contacts, don't use the proper email address anywhere on the internet and it's unlikely to be picked up by spambots.

    msr LE

    Which is complete bollocks.

  13. in that case it's pure coincedence that my private email account has never been hijacked while my secondary account i use to register with was frequently. (until i deleted all the contacts)
