Here's another very special book from Auld-Yin and the ABC - this is a hardback copy of 'Matterhorn' by Karl Marlantes, signed by the author with the dedication 'Army Rumour Service'. Here's the review by the ABC

This another very special book by a very special author, which is why we chose to auction it this week. There is a reserve of £25 on it, and the price includes postage to the UK or BFPO.

It ends at 1800 on 13th November, and all proceeds go to Holidays for Heroes.

    Do I hear £25?

This book really merits a lot more attention than it has received.

It is a great story of conscript young soldiers being used and abused by career officers. Parts where a company is ordered to hand over its food to the next company passing through. However this was not passed up the CoC so the company is then told to stay in country and given another task, which they did, with no food. This story shows a fighting company of USMC soldiers be starved but expected to carry on. The careers of the senior officers being paramount.

This is a work of fiction - but only just. Names and characters have been changed, but the author was one of the junior conscript officers so is just writing about his experiences.

The book is well worth a punt - I am not so sure about The Snails' bikini pic!!

Booky bump with only two days to go. :)

Matterhorn is a marvel--a living, breathing book with Lieutenant Waino Mellas and the men of Bravo Company at its raw and battered heart. Karl Marlantes doesn't introduce you to Vietnam in his brilliant war epic--he unceremoniously drops you into the jungle, disoriented and dripping with leeches, with only the newbie lieutenant as your guide. Mellas is a bundle of anxiety and ambition, a college kid who never imagined being part of a "war that none of his friends thought was worth fighting," who realized too late that "because of his desire to look good coming home from a war, he might never come home at all." A highly decorated Vietnam veteran himself, Marlantes brings the horrors and heroism of war to life with the finesse of a seasoned writer, exposing not just the things they carry, but the fears they bury, the friends they lose, and the men they follow. Matterhorn is as much about the development of Mellas from boy to man, from the kind of man you fight beside to the man you fight for, as it is about the war itself. Through his untrained eyes, readers gain a new perspective on the ravages of war, the politics and bureaucracy of the military, and the peculiar beauty of brotherhood. --Daphne Durham

We forget about the photo and it's still at £26.50 with armchair_jihad. :)

There's was a great interview with the author on Radio Scotland, describing his life experiences, how long it took him to write it, his PSTD ( his sitting through a board room meeting , which may have been in Far East, with a lot of Asians at it which set off a hulicination where he could see a load of dead bodies on the table but he knew they weren't there so sat through the meeting, and spent several hours in tears afterwords!)

  12. £35.

Time for some serious bidding folks on this book - Matterhorn and also for Road of Bones. What a pair of books these would make on your bookshelf. Apart from being fantastic books with great stories to tell they are linked by location.

The action for both of these books takes place on the peninsula that is the major part of South East Asia. This is the peninsula that reaches down from India & China to Malaya then the islands of Indonesia. The action in these books takes place on the West side in Burma for Road of Bones and on the East side in Vietnam for Matterhorn. Momentous battles were waging in these areas, the affects of which we are still feeling today. There may be a quarter of a century between stories but the importance of each tale make this a must have pair to read.

So come on, lets see some real bidding now that the auctions are stabilising a bit again. Road of Bones can be found here.
