Yup, shortly before being decommissioned. Great.
There was another story on HMS Richmond (a Type 23) leaving Portsmouth to conduct CT and CP ops off the Horn of Africa. Couldn't help thinking her 4.5" and Harpoons were a bit over-specced for the task.......
Harpoons? Is she going whaling?
It's partly about looking mean. A Type 42 once stopped a suspect vessel by popping a drill Seadart up onto it's launcher and pointing it at them.
If Captain Faisal Bin-Blackbeard, the Somali pirate, thinks his skiff will have a 4.5'' shell put into it, it might make him think twice about playing silly buggers.
Problem is that Captain Faisal Bin-Blackbeard knows that it won't happen and even if they do get nicked they will be politely escorted ashore and told not to do it again before being released to go about their business.
What a shame. I got very drunk on there when it was the WIGS ship visiting Belize back in 92. Great guys.
Unless it's a Russian Navy ship, then Captain Faisal Bin-Blackbeard knows he's about to gain a number of virgins in a very short space of time.
I knew there was something I liked about them Roosians.
